Sukezane“Manolo Blahnik opened a shop in Omotesando in April. It was the first time their men's shoes were available in Japan, so I immediately bought a pair of spectator shoes and some opera pumps.

The quality of their women's shoes is already well-known, but I hadn't had the chance to visit the London store. So, the opening of the Omotesando store was perfectly timed for me to see the men's lineup.”

When I tried on the spectator shoes in the store, I was surprised by how well the last (the mold of the foot) fit. I've worn hundreds of pairs of shoes from various brands, but these were the first lace-up shoes from an overseas brand where I could tighten the laces all the way up, despite my high instep.

I was reminded of the documentary film 'Manolo: The Boy Who Made the Shoes for the Lizard' that I saw last year, and how stylish Manolo himself was. In a book by Kazuhiko Kato, whom I admire, there's an anecdote about London in the 1960s and early 70s, describing how cool Manolo was. The spectator shoes I bought are named 'Manolo.' I plan to wear them with Margiela's collarless suit.”
