Customized Vintage Clothing, Front and Back: Unconventional Creations

PASS THE BATON is a modern-day recycling shop. It has continued to pass the baton to the next user, who will cherish them, by selling items collected from individuals – belongings imbued with memories, or once-loved possessions too precious to discard – along with the profiles of their former owners and the stories behind them, a novel style of operation. This is not merely about selling objects, but also about presenting a new form of recycling shop that properly conveys the background of the object to its next owner. In 2019, PASS THE BATON celebrates its 10th anniversary. Specially planned for the brand’s 10th anniversary is the collaboration project “AROUND THE RIGHT!!,” with artist Murakami Shu and the fashion label YEAH RIGHT!!, whose core practice is remake. This is a special project where two creators, who have long supported PASS THE BATON’s activities without ever crossing paths, collaborate at last.

Murakami Shu is an artist born in 1975. He encountered silk screen printing while studying at the University of Art and Design, and after studying illustration and graphic design, he began his creative activities. He established a design firm and also began working as an art director. He later founded Murakami Art Co., Ltd., where he oversees the original brand “amabro,” and is known for his energetic activities, including managing the lifestyle select shop “BRICK & MORTAR” and the baby gift select shop “GIVING STORE.”


“YEAH RIGHT!!” is a fashion label established in 2005 by Keita Kawamura and Michiko Imura. They began producing one-of-a-kind items and started exhibiting in 2006. In 2010, they launched the “COMMON SLEEVE” project, allowing sleeves to be exchanged or shared, delving into the act of wearing clothes and the act of selling clothes to arrive at their unique conclusions.




The collaboration involves these two entities engaging in a jam session-like approach, colliding their respective creations to complete the works. Murakami Shu’s silk-screened T-shirts will be processed by YEAH RIGHT!! into dresses, and vintage clothing and tote bags processed by YEAH RIGHT!! will serve as bases for Murakami Shu’s paintings, resulting in a collection of unconventional pieces born from this reciprocal exchange. In addition to YEAH RIGHT!!’s standard dresses and tote bags, new items such as unisex T-shirts and short-sleeved shirts, perfect for the current season and wearable by anyone, will be available. Murakami Shu’s past and present works will also be exhibited and sold during the period. The exhibition will be held at two locations: PASS THE BATON GALLERY in Omotesando, Tokyo, from June 20th, and PASS THE BATON KYOTO GION in Gion, Kyoto, from July 20th.
