Hender Scheme's New Initiative: A Repair Store That Inspires "Circularity" | HENDER SCHEME
HENDER SCHEME
The First Step Towards Sustainability: Repair and Cherish for Longevity
Moving away from a wasteful cycle of discarding old items for new, we embrace a sustainable approach of repairing and cherishing cherished possessions for extended use. Lycos, the operator of Hender Scheme, has opened "circulation," a new circular store that functions as a hub for repairs, resales, customization, and workshops.

Sustainability is a word that immediately comes to mind when discussing the unavoidable social issues we face. The fashion industry, identified as the second-largest polluter globally, is particularly affected. Consequently, there's a growing emphasis on brands collecting and reusing discarded items, as well as utilizing materials and manufacturing processes with a reduced environmental impact. In this context, repair stands out as the most accessible and effective practice of sustainability for everyone.
Among various fashion items, shoe repair holds particular significance. Many leather shoes are designed with sole wear in mind, and those made with Goodyear welting, in particular, can last for over a decade. Even with other construction methods, toe and heel wear can be relatively easily repaired, and with proper care, they can accompany you for a surprisingly long time.
A Semi-Basement Space Marked by an Orange Vinyl Curtain
Despite this knowledge, the hustle of daily life can lead to neglecting shoe repairs. "circulation," the physical store we're introducing today, aims to make shoe repair more accessible and enjoyable. Located in the semi-basement of a building directly across from Hender Scheme's first directly managed store, "Sukima Ebisu," this new shop is marked by the same orange vinyl curtain used at their second location in Kappabashi.
Passing through the curtain reveals rows of shoe racks on either side, with a lab space and repair counter partitioned by glass doors at the back. The wood-paneled space is staffed by experienced, dedicated technicians and equipped with specialized machinery and tools essential for repairs.
Expressing the idea of properties being passed down and continuously used from person to person
The industrial ambiance felt within the space stems from the repair and restoration of damaged or deteriorated areas of the former garage, creating the minimal functionality required for a repair store. The store's design embodies the concept of properties, much like shoes, being passed down from person to person and circulating as users add their own interpretations.
While Hender Scheme previously offered repairs for their own products, "circulation" now accepts repairs for shoes and sneakers from other brands, as well as bags and accessories. Furthermore, they offer four distinct programs: "resale," which adds value through repair and aging; "custom," allowing for new designs through sole replacement or component additions; and "workshops," providing hands-on crafting experiences. The overarching goal is to foster the circulation of goods through these four initiatives.
The Thrill of Discovering Resale Items in Various Sizes and Conditions
Among the resale items, the "Patina" series of shoes from manual industrial products (MIP) is particularly noteworthy. These shoes, made from undyed vegetable-tanned leather that is a pale, skin-like color when new, develop a rich patina over time, transforming into an amber hue that imparts a new character and added value.
Additionally, the store offers a selection of resale items in various sizes and conditions, providing the joy of discovering hidden gems, much like treasure hunting in a vintage shop. The store plans to implement a buy-back service in the future. This offers the potential for shoes that were once shelved due to ill fit to find new owners. For purchasers, the fact that these resale items are appraised by the store's staff provides significant peace of mind.
A New Platform for Connection and Circulation from Person to Person
From a business perspective, a brand repairing mass-produced items might seem counterproductive. However, it is highly significant that an independent Japanese brand has chosen to propose and offer a tangible experience of "repairing for longevity and cherished use." This initiative deepens the customer-brand relationship and fosters trust. Items are passed from person to person, becoming a completed product unique to each user through their engagement. This concept is embodied in "circulation," a new platform designed to facilitate this process and journey.
Repair costs vary depending on the item's design and specifications. Heel (lift) and toe repairs start at ¥4,400, while half-soles start at ¥5,500. In addition to repairs, comprehensive shoe care services such as cleaning and polishing are also available. If you have shoes that concern you, it's best to consult with "circulation" first. Information regarding custom orders and workshops will be updated regularly.
