Packed with New Technology Inherited from the S-Class: Mercedes-Benz Unveils the New C-Class
Powertrains Fully Electrified
The new C-Class lineup is fully electrified, featuring ISG and plug-in hybrid systems.
The C 200 and C 200 4MATIC models are equipped with the new 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder turbo engine, the "M254," which produces 204 hp (150 kW) and 300 Nm of torque on its own. The C 220 d models feature the "OM654M," a 2.0-liter clean diesel inline four-cylinder turbo engine that generates 200 hp (147 kW) and 440 Nm of torque.
Both powertrains feature an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) mild hybrid system positioned between the engine and transmission, providing a temporary boost of up to 20 hp (15 kW) and 200 Nm. This results in a more powerful engine and motor compared to the conventional C 200. The C 220 d also marks the first time Mercedes-Benz has combined a clean diesel engine with an ISG.
The C 350 e, scheduled for introduction in Japan within 2022, is a plug-in hybrid model that combines the new 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder turbo engine M254, producing 204 hp (150 kW) and 320 Nm, with an electric motor generating up to 129 hp (95 kW) and 440 Nm. It utilizes a large 25.4 kWh lithium-ion battery with an internal cooling system, and thanks to features like enhanced energy recovery through regenerative braking, it achieves an all-electric range of 100 km.
In terms of driving dynamics, the optional rear-axle steering system provides the new C-Class with superior maneuverability. Below approximately 60 km/h, the rear wheels turn up to 2.5 degrees in the opposite direction to the front wheels, reducing the turning radius for everyday driving and parking. Above approximately 60 km/h, the rear wheels turn up to 2.5 degrees in the same direction as the front wheels, enhancing stability. This not only preserves the C-Class's traditional agility but also achieves improved stability at medium to high speeds and excellent handling.
