Motor Drive Enjoying Thick Torque
As previously reportedIn addition to the "Aero Coupe" and the new "Plus 8" that have already appeared, Morgan Motor Company exhibited the rumored Plus 8-based EV, the "Plus E."
This Plus E is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery from Zytek, a company that has built relationships with Chrysler, General Motors, and Daimler since electrifying the Lotus Elise in 1997, and has recently participated in the development of the Smart Fortwo ed. The motor has a maximum output of 120kW and a maximum torque of 380Nm, accelerating the 1,250kg vehicle from a standstill to 100km/h in 6 seconds, with a top speed of 185km/h. The cruising range is 120 miles (approximately 193km).
Interestingly, it employs a conventional 5-speed manual transmission. According to Zytek, "A multi-speed transmission can utilize the motor's energy more efficiently, especially at higher speeds."
While reducing emissions and extending range are certainly among the motivations for developing this Plus E, Morgan seems to be more focused on the enjoyment that EVs bring to the driver. Steve Morris, Morgan's Operating Director, stated:
"We built this car because we wanted to know how much fun an electric sports car could be. The Plus E combines Morgan's traditional looks with high technology. The powertrain delivers strong torque at any speed. The manual gearbox extends the range while also engaging the driver in the driving experience. I believe it's a car that drivers will be thrilled to drive."
This EV is truly in the spirit of Morgan. Whether it will be commercially produced depends on the public's reaction. Morgan also plans to explore other possibilities, starting with this concept car, such as different batteries and alternative transmissions like semi-automatics.
