Porsche Macan undergoes a full model change to a BEV-exclusive model | Porsche
Porsche Macan | The Porsche Macan
A Key Model in Porsche's Electrification Strategy
Porsche Japan has begun accepting reservations for the new Macan, which has undergone a full model change to a fully electric, second-generation model.
The Entry-Grade "Macan" is Rear-Wheel Drive for the First Time
Ten years after its launch, the Macan transitions to a second-generation, fully electric model. All four grades, including the two unveiled at the world premiere in Singapore in January 2024, have been introduced to Japan simultaneously.
The lineup consists entirely of BEVs, with four grades offered: "Macan," "Macan 4," "Macan 4S," and "Macan Turbo."
This comprehensive electrification is considered a significant step towards achieving Porsche's ambitious goal of making over 80% of its new car sales electric by 2030.
The Macan is a flagship model for Porsche, generating approximately 87,000 sales annually. Therefore, the BEV conversion of the Macan will have a substantial impact on Porsche's electrification strategy. Furthermore, the ability to leverage the dedicated BEV platform (PPE) within the Volkswagen Group is likely another factor that propelled this electrification.
Notably, the entry-grade "Macan" features rear-wheel drive for the first time. By employing only the rear axle motor with a maximum output of 250 kW (340 PS), used in the Macan 4, it achieves rear-wheel drive, leading to higher efficiency.
Including overboost power, the maximum output is 265 kW (360 PS) and maximum torque is 563 Nm, with a top speed of 220 km/h. The vehicle is 110 kg lighter than the all-wheel-drive Macan 4. The battery capacity is 100 kWh, the same as other grades, providing a WLTP combined range of up to 641 km.
Positioned between the "Macan 4" and "Macan Turbo," which had their world premiere in Singapore in January 2024, is the all-wheel-drive "Macan 4S."
Similar to the "Macan 4" and "Macan Turbo," it employs the latest generation of permanently excited synchronous electric motors on the front and rear axles, delivering a system output of 330 kW (448 PS), up to 380 kW (516 PS) with short-term overboost, and a maximum torque of 820 Nm when using launch control.
The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is also standard, with a top speed of 240 km/h, 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.1 seconds, and a WLTP combined range of up to 606 km.
The "Macan 4," "Macan 4S," and "Macan Turbo" are equipped with the electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (ePTM) system, which Porsche claims can distribute torque between the front and rear wheels approximately five times faster than conventional all-wheel-drive systems.
The body dimensions are mid-size, measuring 4784 mm in length, 1938 mm in width, and 1622 mm in height. The wheelbase is 86 mm longer than the predecessor, while the front and rear overhangs are shorter, and aerodynamic drag is kept to 0.25, contributing to factors like cruising range.
The infotainment system, based on Android Automotive OS, features a voice assistant that can be activated by saying "Hey Porsche" to guide users to charging stations and more. Additionally, it is equipped with features such as a head-up display with augmented reality technology.
An off-road design package is available as an option for all models. This package is said to make traversing rough unpaved roads and steep ascents and descents easier, increasing the ground clearance by 10 mm to 195 mm compared to the standard model.
The steering wheel for the Macan is right-hand drive only for all grades. Prices are 9.98 million yen for the "Macan," 10.45 million yen for the "Macan 4," 11.96 million yen for the "Macan 4S," and 15.25 million yen for the "Macan Turbo."
