Opens 'Audi Charging Hub Kioicho,' a Fast-Charging Facility Contributing to Decarbonization
Audi Japan has opened 'Audi Charging Hub Kioicho,' a charging facility for electric vehicles (BEVs), in Chiyoda Ward. This marks the seventh Audi charging hub globally and the first outside of Europe.
Open to All BEV Users
A lack of charging infrastructure is a recognized challenge for BEVs in urban areas. To address issues such as the inability to charge at apartment complexes or the long charging times even when facilities are available nearby, Audi has opened 'Audi Charging Hub Kioicho,' its first fast-charging hub outside of Europe.
'Audi Charging Hub Kioicho' utilizes 'Hyper Charge,' a battery-type ultra-fast EV charger manufactured by PowerX, with two units installed, providing four charging ports. Each unit has two ports, enabling simultaneous fast charging for two electric vehicles. The maximum output for a single vehicle is 150kW, and when charging two vehicles simultaneously, the output per vehicle is up to 120kW.
A maximum output of 150kW means that for a range of 100km, charging can be completed in approximately 8.5 minutes for the Audi Q8 e-tron currently sold in Japan, or 6.5 minutes for the e-tron GT, depending on environmental factors such as remaining charge and ambient temperature.
During off-peak hours, the built-in batteries store carbon-neutral electricity, and charging begins when demand is high. Furthermore, solar panels are installed to supplement the electricity required for operating the 'Audi Charging Hub,' contributing to decarbonization while offering enhanced convenience to BEV users.
To allow more BEV users to experience fast charging at 'Audi Charging Hub Kioicho,' Audi is offering a complimentary 30-minute fast charging trial campaign for all BEV users from Friday, April 26, 2024, to Sunday, June 30, 2024. During this period, all BEV users can experience fast charging up to two times per user.
While initially intended for members of the Premium Charging Alliance (PCA) – owners of BEVs from Audi, Volkswagen, and Porsche – 'Audi Charging Hub Kioicho' will be available for use by all BEV users on a paid basis even after the campaign concludes.
Additionally, two ports on one unit will be designated for PCA members, offering them priority access. In the future, a reservation system will also be introduced for PCA members, providing an even more premium service with no waiting times.
Matthias Schëpers, Brand Director of Audi Japan, commented, "Kioicho is a convenient location that can be easily visited during short breaks. While charging, customers can relax or view Audi's latest models at Audi City Kioicho, minimizing the time spent charging and allowing for more effective use of that time."
Following Kioicho, Audi plans to open another 'Audi Charging Hub' in Shiba Park, Tokyo.
