World-Renowned Children's Author Astrid Lindgren Penned the Screenplay
Astrid Lindgren, the globally acclaimed Swedish children's author, known for works like "Pippi Longstocking" and the "Lotten" series, penned the screenplay for this beloved film. After more than fifty years, her popular work is finally being released in Japanese theaters.
The film is a condensed version of a story from the book "On Our Island," which was based on a 13-part television series originally written by Lindgren. It extracts memorable episodes, such as the interactions between children and animals and the young girl's longing for romance, and brings them to life on screen with the same cast. In Sweden, it was an unprecedented hit, and its popularity led to the production of sequels, establishing it as a beloved series.
Director Olle Hellbom, who helmed the film, also worked on many other films based on Lindgren's works, including the "Pippi Longstocking" series (1970), forming a renowned creative partnership.
Chorlben, a plump and spirited girl, is played by Maria Johansson. The film also features numerous animals, including her "companion" dog, Sailor, as well as rabbits and seals, a testament to Lindgren's love for animals.
What Becomes of the Baby Seal Chorlben and Her Friends Receive?
Chorlben, a girl with a big smile, a round bottom, and a demeanor that can sometimes surprise adults, is always with her beloved dog, Sailor. One day, Chorlben receives a baby seal from a fisherman, names him Moses, and begins to raise him with her friends.
However, Sailor grows lonely as Chorlben becomes engrossed with Moses. Then, the fisherman, realizing the baby seal could fetch a high price, tries to take Moses back from Chorlben and her friends, while Sailor becomes entangled in another incident...
This story of Chorlben and her friends is sure to bring back childhood memories for adults, as well as delight children enjoying their summer vacation. Against the backdrop of Sweden's rich natural landscapes and its simple, charming style, the film, even half a century after its creation, continues to offer fresh wonder and smiles.
