A fate set in motion by pure, forbidden love spirals into madness

Directed by Anne Fontaine, known for "Coco Before Chanel," this film adapts Nobel Prize-winning author Doris Lessing's novel "The Grandmothers." The director, who has previously captured sensual dramas with elegant visual artistry, now portrays a transgressive love story where two best friends fall for each other's sons.

The screenplay was penned by Christopher Hampton, writer of "Dangerous Liaisons" and "Atonement." Tackling this ultimate taboo are Hollywood's own powerhouses, Naomi Watts and Robin Wright, who fully embody the two women crossing a forbidden line.

In a beautiful beach town, Roz and Lil have been best friends since childhood. Their teenage sons, too, have forged a strong bond, and the families have maintained close ties. One summer day, Lil's son, who has long harbored feelings for Roz, confesses his overwhelming emotions. The two begin a serious, albeit hesitant, love affair. Their secret is discovered by Roz's son, and the gears of fate begin to turn.
