A Stellar Cast of Over 20 Distinctive German Actors Assembled!

'A Coffee in Berlin' follows Niko, a university dropout currently in a state of 'life on pause,' as he encounters various people and experiences strange events that lead him to reflect on his life. This feature film debut by director Jan Ole Gerster, hailed as the 'savior of German cinema,' propelled him to stardom.

Presented as a graduation film from the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB), the movie was a hit not only in Germany but also internationally, winning Best Picture and Best Director at the German Film Awards. The work of this rising talent, now capturing global attention, is finally being released in Japan.

Tom Schilling, highly popular in Germany, delivers a compelling performance as Niko, a young man navigating his own life. To portray the eccentric characters who punctuate Niko's journey, over 20 distinctive and renowned German actors were brought together, enriching the narrative.

The city of Berlin, captured in sharp, monochrome visuals, also plays a crucial role as a character in the film. Alongside a Berlin that blends art and history, past and present into a fantastical and beautiful tapestry, the jazz soundtrack flowing throughout the entire film is also worth noting.

Niko has been spending his days in Berlin simply 'thinking' since dropping out of university two years ago. His unlucky day began when he missed his coffee at his girlfriend's place.

His driver's license is suspended, his bank card is swallowed by an ATM, and he's bothered by an old man living upstairs. Venturing out into the city with his best friend Matze, he encounters a series of peculiar individuals: Yurika, a former classmate who is unrecognizable after a successful diet; a popular actor known for his melodramatic performances, and others. Furthermore, his father finds out about his withdrawal from university, Yurika attempts to seduce him, and he keeps missing his coffee wherever he goes...

The film delicately portrays, with a touch of humor and biting irony, that uncertain period familiar to many, when one doesn't know what to do, and the moment of breaking free from it. It's a story like a cup of coffee – slightly bitter, yet warming the soul.
