Won Best Film at Last Year’s London Film Festival
‘Rust and Bone’ tells the story of a woman who, after losing her legs, finds the will to live again through an encounter with a man. This highly anticipated film, which won Best Film at last year’s London Film Festival, is finally coming to Japan.
Marion Cotillard, the muse of cinema currently garnering international attention, takes on the challenging role of a woman with severe disabilities. She previously won an Academy Award for Best Actress for ‘La Vie en Rose’ and has appeared in recent hits like ‘Midnight in Paris’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ Matthias Schoenaerts, a rising star, plays the single father who guides the protagonist toward hope, delivering a powerful performance.
Director Jacques Audiard, who previously won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival for ‘A Prophet,’ masterfully portrays the resilience of the human spirit—the ability to rise above pain and sorrow, and even to be reborn—with breathtaking realism.
Stephanie Takes a Step Towards the Future Through Her Connection with Ali
Stephanie, a killer whale trainer at Marineland, suffers a severe injury that results in the loss of both her legs when the stage collapses during a performance. While in despair, she meets Ali, an awkward man who struggles to express affection.
Ali, a former nightclub bouncer now working as a night watchman, is a single father. Instead of treating Stephanie with pity, he guides her into the sea, fully aware of her condition. As Stephanie deepens her connection with Ali, who is enigmatic and wild like an animal, she gradually rediscovers her will to live and takes a step towards a bright future.—.
The film’s luminous imagery of light, the sea, and the world captivates the viewer. This is a gem of a love story that moves us with its depiction of a struggle to find the light of life amidst great adversity.
