PHEV to Go on Sale in the U.S. This Year

Last year, the "Clarity Fuel Cell" was released. The Clarity series will now be joined by PHEV and EV variants. Honda aims to replace two-thirds of its four-wheeled vehicle lineup with zero-emission vehicles such as PHEVs, hybrids, FCVs, and EVs by 2030, and the announcement of the Clarity PHEV and EV is part of this initiative.

The "Clarity Plug-In Hybrid" is equipped with a 17kWh battery. It can travel 40 miles (approximately 64 km) on electric power alone, and Honda claims a total driving range of over 330 miles (approximately 531 km) by combining the electric motor with a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine. Drivers can also choose from three driving modes: "Normal," "ECON," and "Sport."

Meanwhile, the "Clarity Electric" features a 25.5kWh battery. Powered by a 120kW (161ps) motor, it offers a driving range of over 80 miles (approximately 128 km). A full charge takes just over 3 hours at 240 volts, and it can be charged to 80% in 30 minutes using a quick charger. It is envisioned for daily commuting and similar uses.

The "Clarity Plug-In Hybrid" will go on sale in the U.S. later this year. The "Clarity Electric" is scheduled to begin leasing in California and Oregon in the U.S. later this year.
