Test Drive: The New Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, a Flagship SUV That Excels in Both Performance and Design

Experiencing the 2-Motor S-AWC Drive

While the Outlander PHEV offers various driving options, the most comfortable experience in urban driving is using "Normal" mode with the "Innovative Pedal" engaged for effortless one-pedal driving. As long as there's battery charge, you can enjoy a quiet ride on electric power. Even when the engine occasionally kicks in, the sound insulation is so effective that it's barely noticeable. Therefore, switching to "Charge" mode after some driving to begin recharging poses no issues, as it doesn't negatively impact the sound or driving experience. Incidentally, the one-pedal system requires the brake pedal for a complete stop, a design choice intended to enhance convenience during low-speed maneuvers like parking.
In terms of pure performance, such as acceleration and deceleration, the new model doesn't offer the explosive dash seen in some other recent EVs. Even in "POWER" mode, the difference wasn't dramatic, which could be attributed to the vehicle's weight of 2,110kg or perhaps a deliberate choice by Mitsubishi to showcase its refined driving characteristics. On rough roads, the slight body undulation due to the large tires might be considered a minor drawback, but it's minimal.
In terms of driver assistance, it features "MI-PILOT," a one-button system that combines full-speed adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist, linked to road signs and navigation. Additionally, the V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) function, which allows the car's electricity to power a home, can supply power for up to 12 days for a typical household, a valuable feature in disaster-prone Japan.
The price for the "P" grade tested is ¥5,320,700. Orders for the new model have been strong, exceeding 10,000 units within three months of its release. While Mitsubishi vehicles traditionally see a high proportion of owners trading in their previous Mitsubishi, this trend is shifting with the Outlander, as nearly half of the buyers are switching from other manufacturers. This indicates that the vehicle is exceptionally well-executed, to the point where a PR representative jokingly remarked, "This car isn't quite like a typical Mitsubishi (laughs)."
