Test drive of the Daihatsu Rocky / Toyota Raize, now with a high-quality, low-price hybrid model

Effortless One-Pedal Driving

The test vehicle was a Toyota Raize Hybrid Z grade. Its dimensions remain unchanged: 3,995mm length, 1,695mm width, 1,620mm height, and a 2,525mm wheelbase, utilizing Daihatsu's DNGA platform. The exterior design is also identical, with the only hybrid-specific touch being the blue emblem on the front grille.
The interior layout has seen some changes. The meter cluster in front of the driver is now specific to hybrid models, displaying power flow in various ways. Additionally, higher grades feature an electric parking brake, eliminating the manual lever and creating a cleaner console area.
Driving on city streets in Tokyo, the motor's brisk performance, generating 106ps (76kW) and 170Nm, was impressive. From a standstill to around 20-30 km/h, acceleration is as quiet and smooth as an EV, providing a sense of "electrification" rarely experienced in this class.
However, due to the limited battery capacity, the engine frequently engages during longer drives. When accelerating hard, a noticeable engine sound accompanies the speed. This differs from more expensive hybrid models with larger batteries and requires a certain level of acceptance.
Activating the "S-PDL (Smart Pedal)" switch below the dashboard enables "one-pedal" driving, controlling vehicle speed solely with the accelerator pedal. This is another characteristic feature of the series hybrid system. I found it easy to master due to the moderate G-forces during acceleration and deceleration, making driving significantly more relaxed.
The brake pedal is only needed for the final stop. However, the creep function remains, facilitating easier control at very low speeds, such as when parking. With a fuel efficiency of 28.0 km/L (WLTC mode), this model is undoubtedly the most appealing choice for those considering the Rocky or Raize.
