The Challenge of Thin Movements (1)

In 2016, Panerai is once again focusing on its in-house movements. Alongside the introduction of two multi-functional movements in the P.4000 caliber series, the brand demonstrates its prowess in complex calibers as well.

Expanding Functionality with New In-House Movements

Since the introduction of its in-house movement, the P.2002 caliber, in 2005, Panerai has firmly established its position as a manufacture. Year by year, it has been broadening its functional range, and 2016 saw the debut of two new movements.

These are the P.4001 and P.4002 calibers, automatic movements with micro-rotors, featuring dual time zone and power reserve indicators. The difference between the two lies in the position of the power reserve display, but both are based on the P.4000 caliber, a micro-rotor movement introduced in 2014. The "Radiomir 1940" series, a slim automatic model, was released with enhanced functionality, showcasing the manufacture's capabilities.

Furthermore, the brand continues to release compelling models in its complex and vintage lines, offering a rich and diverse lineup.

Enhancing Multi-Functionality in Micro-Rotor Calibers

The image of Panerai as a pioneer of the "big and thick" watch trend is now a thing of the past. Without compromising its distinct style, Panerai is a firmly established manufacture brand, now boasting a range of in-house movements.

The P.4000 caliber, developed by Panerai in 2014, opened new horizons for the brand. Its adoption of a micro-rotor allowed for a slimmer profile in automatic movements. The "Radiomir 1940" series equipped with this caliber established an elegant aesthetic.

This "Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic Acciaio - 45mm" is one such timepiece, possessing a unique style that is both large and slim. True to Panerai's mid-range multi-functional models, it features a second time zone display via a central GMT hand and a day/night indicator. Additionally, a power reserve indicator is visible on the movement's bridges through the exhibition case back.

Powered by the P.4001 caliber, developed from the P.4000, this model achieves a balance of multi-functionality and the "Radiomir 1940" styling. (Incidentally, models equipped with the P.4002 caliber feature the power reserve display on the dial.)

This timepiece showcases Panerai's exceptional movement development and manufacturing capabilities, heralding a new era of sophistication for the sleek "Radiomir 1940" line.

Reviving a Legendary Watch for Modern Times

Panerai has consistently created models that reinterpret its DNA through contemporary technology. The "Radiomir 1940 3 Days Acciaio - 47mm" presented here is another testament to Panerai's craftsmanship.

This watch is a recreation of a rare "Radiomir" supplied to the Egyptian Navy in the 1950s, of which only 30 to 40 pieces were made. While the "Egiziano" (Egyptian), a massive 60mm wristwatch, is famous among those supplied to the Egyptian Navy, this model is reportedly called the "Egiziano Piccolo" (Piccolo meaning "small" in Italian) to distinguish it.

The "Radiomir 1940" case, which features the lugs of the Luminor and was produced during the transitional period from the historical "Radiomir" to the "Luminor," is used to closely replicate the appearance of the "Egiziano Piccolo." The shape of the hands and the design of the dial also revive elements from the historically rare piece. The faded brown dial and beige indices evoke the patina of a vintage watch that has weathered the years.

On the other hand, it employs the P.3000 caliber, Panerai's representative hand-wound movement, ensuring proven mechanical reliability. This allows one to fully appreciate the aesthetic of a past masterpiece, backed by the assurance of cutting-edge technology. Such a fortunate era has indeed arrived.

A Set Recreating Panerai's Historic Masterpieces

With the end of the Cold War, Panerai was compelled to transition from military equipment to watchmaking. In 1996, a pivotal moment occurred for Panerai. Before joining the Vendôme Group (the predecessor of the current Richemont Group) in 1997, during the "Pre-Vendôme" era, Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone became enamored with the brand and commissioned special orders for himself and his associates.

The "Luminor 8 Days Set" introduced here is a limited edition two-watch set that includes a reissue of a special order made by Stallone during the Pre-Vendôme era.

The "Luminor Black Seal Left-Handed 8 Days Acciaio DLC - 44mm" is inspired by a military model from the 1940s. Italian Navy special forces divers often wore their watches on their right wrist to accommodate wrist compasses on their left. Panerai therefore produced watches with the crown on the left side, operable by the left hand. This model recreates that left-handed specification in an all-black "Luminor."

Meanwhile, the "Luminor Daylight 8 Days Acciaio - 44mm" is a striking model with a refined white dial. "Daylight" is famous for being the movie in which Stallone wore a Panerai watch. This model recreates a specification produced in very limited quantities in 1996, featuring blue steel hands and blue indices.

Both of these special edition models are powered by the P.5000 caliber, offering an 8-day power reserve. The special presentation box is a faithful reproduction of the one used for early "Luminor" models. It includes a model of the S.L.C. (Siluro a Lenta Corsa), a slow-speed torpedo used by the Italian Navy's special forces, and a booklet detailing Panerai's history and the military secrets of the special forces. It is the perfect set for reminiscing about Panerai's achievements, including its Pre-Vendôme era.

An Homage to Galileo Galilei

"Lo Scienziato" is a model from the Italian brand Panerai that pays homage to Galileo Galilei, the genius astronomer and physicist born in Italy. Previous iterations, such as the all-black version, have also been released.

A key feature is the tourbillon carriage located at the 11 o'clock position on the dial. While typically, the carriage rotates parallel to the movement, in Panerai's case, it rotates vertically. In this special model, the movement is extensively skeletonized, allowing for constant appreciation of the tourbillon carriage's unique motion.

Another remarkable aspect of this exceptional complication is its lightness, defying its substantial size. Not only is the movement etched, but the case is also crafted from lightweight titanium. Furthermore, employing the latest direct laser sintering technology, the complex case shape is manufactured from titanium powder, resulting in a harder and lighter finish than conventional methods.

As the model name suggests, it is a GMT watch with a day/night indicator, combining high functionality and practicality befitting a Panerai high-end model. It is a complication watch that impresses with its sheer level of refinement.
