A Century of Connection: Panerai and the Italian Navy's Marina Militare
PANERAI | Submersible Marina Militare
Panerai has unveiled two new models, the Submersible Marina Militare, to commemorate its long-standing historical partnership with the Italian Navy's Marina Militare. Inspired by the Naval Aviation unit, 'Aviation Navale,' these timepieces embody the fusion of Panerai's heritage and advanced technology.
A Century of Connection: Panerai and the Italian Navy's Marina Militare
Panerai's relationship with the Italian Navy began in the 1910s and has continued for over a century. Entrusted with developing precision instruments capable of withstanding harsh military missions, Panerai forged a deep bond with the navy through research into luminous paints and the production of diving watches for special underwater units. In 1935, it developed the Ref. 2533, the prototype for its first military diver's watch, establishing the technology to adapt to demanding underwater operations.
This partnership extended beyond watchmaking to the development of a wide range of military equipment, including aircraft carriers and landing systems for carrier-based helicopters. Panerai's innovation, consistently focused on products for extreme environments, can be said to have been cultivated through its collaboration with the navy.
The new models draw inspiration from the Italian Naval Aviation unit, 'Aviation Navale,' an elite force that operates state-of-the-art aircraft and coordinates with the fleet. As Panerai CMO Alessandro Ficarelli states, "These models are tools for modern heroes, redefining our mission to create watches essential for adventure."
The collection includes two models: one in stainless steel and another crafted from the innovative material, Carbotech™.
Both models are powered by the automatic P.900 calibre. Despite its slim design at 28mm in diameter and 4.2mm in thickness, it offers a three-day power reserve and a seconds reset function, combining high precision with practicality.
The stainless steel model features a 44mm brushed stainless steel case paired with a matte green ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel. The other model utilizes Carbotech™, a lightweight yet highly durable material.
Carbotech™ is a composite material created by compressing carbon fiber with a high-performance polymer (PEEK) under high pressure, enhancing its strength while ensuring wear resistance and lightness. Each piece possesses a unique pattern due to the material's distinct texture, adding to its individuality.
The dial features a green and black gradient finish, inspired by the flight gear and helmets of the Aviation Navale. "MARINA MILITARE" is inscribed at the 6 o'clock position.
Grey Super-LumiNova® ensures excellent legibility in low light, while the small seconds subdial is designed to resemble a radar with an anchor motif. The indices have been enlarged by 20% and the luminous surface increased by 45% compared to previous models, allowing for instantaneous time reading in demanding conditions.
The case back is engraved with the 'Aviation Navale' wing emblem, a first for a Panerai collection. With a water resistance of 300 meters, all models undergo testing at pressures 25% higher than the specified standard, underscoring their unwavering reliability as dive watches.
Both models come standard with a green canvas strap, finished to evoke the durability of military uniforms. A black rubber strap is also included, allowing for versatility depending on the occasion.
The Submersible Marina Militare, a fusion of reliability and functionality, invites reflection not only on its specifications but also on the century-long history woven between Panerai and the Italian Navy, and the future that lies ahead.
