The "Kō-Tama" Duo's Performance Presented in Two Parts
Kataoka Nizaemon (formerly Kataoka Takao) and Bandō Tamasaburō, once known as the "Kō-Tama" duo, created a massive sensation and remain immensely popular today. This spring, the two reunited for the first time in 36 years to perform the long-awaited "Sakurajima Azuma Bunsho" (Sakurajima Azuma Bunsho), generating significant buzz.
From the moment the performance was announced, social media erupted with joy, with comments like "I've always wanted to see this play!" and "Is this a dream?" Tickets sold out instantly. To the delight of those who missed out and those who wish to see it again, Cinema Kabuki will release the latest work, "Sakurajima Azuma Bunsho," in two parts—the upper and lower volumes—in Spring 2022.
Written by the eccentric Tsuruya Nanboku, "Sakurajima Azuma Bunsho" is a masterpiece of decadent beauty, rivaling his "Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan." The story unfolds with Nanboku's signature supernatural elements, centering on Sakurajima, who is tossed about by fate on a wandering journey; Seigen, who is consumed by his obsession with the threads of karma; and Gonzo, who exudes a dark allure.
While Gonzo and Seigen are sometimes played by different actors, in this production, Tamasaburō plays Sakurajima, and Nizaemon takes on the dual roles of Gonzo and Seigen—the same casting as their collaboration 36 years ago. Their performances defy their actual ages. Sakurajima's elegance shines through despite her hardships, Seigen's humanity, and Gonzo's sensuality are breathtaking. The stylistic beauty and stage direction of kabuki are also superb.
This production, a must-see not only for kabuki fans but for all, was filmed during the Kabuki-za Theatre performances in April and June 2021. Cinema Kabuki captures kabuki stage performances with diverse camera work, allowing audiences to enjoy high-definition visuals and 5.1 channel surround sound. The historic masterpiece "Sakurajima Azuma Bunsho" will be reborn on screen in Spring 2022 as a dramatic cinematic work, incorporating unique cuts and editing made possible by Cinema Kabuki.
