Opening Ceremony, Stage Greetings, and Talk Sessions with Guests from Italy

Launched in the spring of 2001 as part of "Italian Year in Japan," the "Italian Film Festival" marks its 15th anniversary this year. Supported by many film and Italy enthusiasts, it has become a Golden Week staple, attracting over 10,000 visitors annually.

This year's festival will screen 24 films: 14 new releases produced since 2013, along with one older film and nine short films. Among them is a story about the changes a family undergoes when they take in a boy for the summer, and a father's struggles as his daughter navigates the space between dreams and reality, growing up in the process. The Wonders (tentative title)Also featured in a special screening is "Last Summer," starring Rinko Kikuchi, with a script contribution from Banana Yoshimoto, depicting the final four days spent by a mother who lost custody of her child and her son, rendered in a quiet style.

In commemoration of the 90th anniversary of "Istituto Luce," an organization that promotes Italian cinema both domestically and internationally, nine short films will also be screened. These were created by emerging filmmakers who selected approximately 10 minutes of material from vast archival footage as their basis.

The lineup also includes a diverse selection of other films, such as "The Chair of Happiness," the final work of director Carlo Mazzacurati, and "The Human Value," which won seven awards, including Best Picture, at the David di Donatello Awards, the highest honor in Italian cinema. In Tokyo, an opening ceremony and stage greetings with guests are planned, followed by Q&A sessions with visiting directors and actors after the screenings.
