A Masterpiece of Dialogue, Inspired by History

In the final days of World War II, Hitler's "Operation Annihilate Paris" was on the verge of execution. It was a man's once-in-a-lifetime "negotiation" that saved the beautiful city at that moment. The stage play "Diplomatie," based on historical facts and a major hit in France, has been adapted into a film by master director Volker Schlöndorff.

The film portrays, with a sense of tension, the skillful diplomacy of the Swedish consul general who wishes to save Paris, and the inner turmoil of the German officer forced to carry out the destruction under threat to his family, all set against a backdrop of thrilling and witty negotiations.

The roles of Swedish Consul General Nordling and German officer von Cortitz, who continue from the stage play, are passionately performed by the acclaimed duo André Dussollier and Niels Arestrup. Their performances, born from three years of engaging with this historical event and a deep understanding of the story and characters, are a must-see.

A Fateful Night for the World's Most Beautiful City

August 25, 1944, France under Nazi German occupation. On this day, all of Paris's iconic landmarks—the Eiffel Tower, the Opera House, Notre Dame Cathedral—all of the world-renowned beautiful structures, were destined for demolition.

With defeat looming, Hitler, captivated by the beauty of Paris, had ordered: "If we cannot have Paris, we will burn it to the ground." Amidst this, Swedish Consul General Nordling visits the German officer von Cortitz, tasked with Paris's destruction, in an attempt to thwart the operation.
