The World Fell in Love with Two People Cherishing Their Limited Time
This film is a love story about a young man and woman who fall in love while both battling incurable diseases. Yet, rather than succumbing to despair, they live their limited time with a dazzling vibrancy. Despite its sensitive subject matter, the film has become a social phenomenon in countries around the world, inspiring audiences with its positivity.
The novel, based on the author's friend who passed away at 16, was a #1 New York Times bestseller in 2012. The screenplay was penned by Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber, the duo behind '(500) Days of Summer,' with direction by emerging talent Josh Boone.
Shailene Woodley, acclaimed for her award-winning performance in 'The Descendants,' portrays Hazel, a young woman with terminal cancer. She delivers a compelling performance as the protagonist, who, despite her cynical and "fiercely" witty nature, is deeply affectionate.
Ansel Elgort, known for 'Carrie,' plays Gus, a witty and relentlessly optimistic young man who overcame osteosarcoma after a leg amputation. The cast also features Laura Dern as Hazel's mother and Willem Dafoe as a pivotal novelist character. This ensemble of fresh, next-generation talent is supported by seasoned, distinctive actors.
What Did They Discover in the Netherlands, a Journey to Fulfill Their Dreams?
Hazel Grace is a terminal cancer patient. While her condition is currently stabilized by medication, she is unable to attend school, has no friends, and relies on an oxygen tank. It is at a cancer support group, which she attends reluctantly, that she meets Gus, who overcame osteosarcoma and had a leg amputated.
Gus, smitten by Hazel's unique spirit, gives her a remarkable gift to avoid hurting her: he emails her favorite author and secures a reply. This exchange sparks their journey to the Netherlands, seeking answers about the novel's "aftermath" that Hazel desperately wants to know. Though they travel as "friends" because of their deep affection, their trip takes an unexpected turn when the author offers surprising insights. On their final day, Gus reveals a significant truth to Hazel.
