Venus in Fur: Master Director Roman Polanski's Ultimate Sensual Beauty at 80
Roman Polanski, who won an Academy Award for "The Pianist" and continues to energetically make films even past the age of 80, will release his latest work, "Venus in Fur," on Saturday, December 20th, at Bunkamura Le Cinema, Human Trust Cinema, and other theaters nationwide.
Text by WATANABE Reiko (OPENERS)
Mysterious actress Wanda unleashes desires buried deep within.
Roman Polanski's "Venus in Fur" is a cinematic adaptation of the stage play "Venus in Furs," a major Broadway hit, inspired by the autobiographical novel by Masoch, the origin of the word "masochism." Polanski, who made his name known worldwide with "The Pianist," impressively won the Best Director award at the 39th César Awards last year at the age of 80.
An actress bursts into the audition venue just as it's about to conclude. Despite her lateness, she begins to change into costume and forcefully pleads with the director, Thomas, to audition her. He reluctantly agrees.
However, as soon as Wanda begins to act, her lines are already perfect, and her understanding and grasp of the role are impeccable. Wanda quickly captivates Thomas, who initially looked down on her, and before he knows it, she transcends the audition setting, completely enthralling him with her alluring charm.
Wanda, who exudes an overwhelming presence, is played by Emmanuelle Seigner, a talented actress and director Polanski's wife. Seigner, who became Polanski's partner both professionally and personally after appearing in "Frantic," was nominated for Best Actress at the 39th César Awards for her role in this film, her fifth collaboration with the director.
Thomas, who is manipulated by Wanda, is played by Mathieu Amalric, known as a chameleon actor. While appearing in films by numerous renowned directors, Amalric also demonstrates his versatility, having won the Best Director award at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival for "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," lending his performance a compelling depth.
The highlight is the battle for casting between the actress and the director, unfolding within the confined space of a theater. As the audience witnesses the shifting power dynamics between the two, they become one with Thomas, their own buried desires awakened as they are manipulated by Wanda. One cannot help but be overwhelmed by the sensual expression that Roman Polanski has perfected at the age of 80.
