Actor Jean-Pierre Léaud, a frequent collaborator of Truffaut, Scheduled for On-Stage Greeting
François Truffaut was born in Paris in 1932. Though captivated by cinema upon his first encounter at age eight, his youth was marked by delinquency, leading to his confinement in a juvenile detention center. Yet, it was undoubtedly film that saved him. He began writing film criticism at a young age and completed his debut film, 'The Adventures of Antoine Doinel' (1957), at 25.
Subsequently, he solidified his status as a master of French cinema with 'The 400 Blows' (1959), which won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival and became a major hit, and 'Fahrenheit 451' (1966). He continued to create numerous masterpieces, including 'Day for Night' (1973).
During the festival, all 23 films directed by Truffaut will be screened. On the opening day, Saturday, October 11th, an on-stage greeting will take place, with Jean-Pierre Léaud, who portrayed Truffaut's alter ego and shared a father-son-like relationship with the director, scheduled to appear.
In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of his passing, three of his representative works, including 'The 400 Blows,' have been remastered in HD and will be released on Blu-ray for the first time. Furthermore, 'Truffaut by Truffaut,' a collection of interviews with the director by film critics Koichi Yamada and Shigehiko Hasumi, who were close to Truffaut, has been published by Heibonsha. Notably, Yamada, considered a leading authority on Truffaut, has handled the subtitles for all films in this festival except 'Day for Night,' ensuring that this selection represents the definitive works as curated by someone who knew Truffaut intimately.
Various events are also being held in conjunction with the film festival. The H.P. France Bijoux Marunouchi store will feature jewelry inspired by scenes from his films, while the Kagurazaka branch of the renowned French bakery PAUL will offer limited-edition products inspired by northeastern France. These and other events at various establishments are planned to celebrate Truffaut's work and his connection to France.
Truffaut continues to exert a profound influence on film enthusiasts worldwide. This is an opportunity to experience the brilliance of his cinematic legacy on the big screen.
