Highly acclaimed for inheriting the sensibility of masters like Éric Rohmer and Jacques Rozier, Guillaume Brac's "A Young Man at His Leisure" achieved an unusually long run in its native France. The film, set in a small seaside town in the Picardy region of northern France, portrays the summer days of Sylvain, a single, slightly overweight man, spent with a beautiful mother and daughter. It is now being released in Japanese theaters.
To date, Brac has released only two films: "A Young Man at His Leisure" and his debut short, "The Castaways," which is being screened concurrently and features Sylvain attempting to help a man whose bicycle has a flat tire. Yet, this is the work of Guillaume Brac, born in 1977, who has already demonstrated an abundance of talent. He began directing shorts while attending France's national film school and has his first feature-length film, "Tonnerre" (original title), slated for release in 2014. He is a promising young talent that France can be proud of.
Sylvain is played by Vincent Macaigne, a friend of director Brac and one of France's most talked-about actors today. Macaigne also appears in "The Castaways," portraying the same character and bringing to life the unique presence of Sylvain, adding significant depth to the film.
A Beautiful Mother and Daughter Arrive at Sylvain's Apartment
At the end of summer, a beautiful mother and daughter arrive on vacation at the apartment managed by local young man Sylvain. The mother is cheerful and free-spirited, while the daughter is a bit shy. The three spend time together, enjoying the sea and shopping, but as their vacation draws to a close,—.
These two stories, revolving around the character of Sylvain and directed by Brac, whose future success is all but assured, unfold with a sweet melancholy, leaving a lingering impression akin to reading a superb short story.
