The "Most Heartbreaking Love Novel of Our Time" Fully Realized on Film!
At times a novelist. At others, a jazz trumpeter, singer-songwriter, translator, poet, engineer… Boris Vian was a man of many talents, effortlessly shifting between his various personas. He lived his life to the fullest, departing this world at the young age of 39.
Published in 1946, "L'écume des jours" became a massive bestseller, selling over four million copies in France and garnering immense support, particularly among young readers. In Japan, it gained attention through a manga adaptation by Kyoko Okazaki, and a new translation was published in 2011, marking its third Japanese rendition.
This story, which continues to captivate people across borders and generations, has now been brought to the screen by the most fitting director: Michel Gondry, who in 2004 crafted "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," a bittersweet love story set in a fantastical world.
Gondry himself has been an ardent admirer of the book since he first read it as a teenager. The novel's unique imagery—such as a piano that creates cocktails or clouds that transport lovers—is brought to life on screen one after another. Remarkably, most of these were handcrafted. This project could only have been realized through a deep love for the source material.
Furthermore, the screen overflows with the exhilaration of Colin and Chloé, the two lovers, enveloping the viewer in bliss. This is precisely why the tragic fate that eventually befalls them is so heart-wrenching. Cute yet cruel, heartbreaking yet happy,—a love story radiating such contradictory charms is born.

A Fragile Love Story, Like a Bubble, Told in a Fantastical World
The setting is Paris. Colin, who lives freely off his inherited wealth, falls in love with Chloé, a woman whose name shares the same sound as a Duke Ellington song. After a grand wedding celebrated by their friends, the couple enjoys days filled with love and excitement.
But one day, Chloé falls ill with a mysterious condition: water lilies begin to sprout in her lungs. To cover the exorbitant medical expenses, Colin starts working, confronting the harsh realities of society. Chloé weakens day by day. Not only Colin's life but also those of his friends begin to unravel. With only love remaining, can Colin save Chloé?—?
Colin is played by Romain Duris, now a celebrated actor in France, known for "The Beat That My Heart Skipped" and "Paris." Duris masterfully portrays the character's emotional journey, transitioning from carefree enjoyment of life in the first half to embodying the poignant aspects of the novel, acclaimed as "the most heartbreaking love novel of our time." Chloé is played by Audrey Tautou, nominated for a BAFTA for "Amélie" and "Coco Before Chanel." She brings a radiant lightness and charm to the character's delicate beauty as depicted in the novel.

Omar Sy, who starred in the hit film "The Intouchables," brings a lively performance as Nicolas, Colin's cheerful personal chef by day and a stylish bon vivant by night, adding a vibrant touch to the screen. The Intouchablesadds a vibrant touch to the screen.
The cinematography is by Christophe Beaucarne of "Coco Before Chanel." The art direction by Stéphane Rozanboon and costume design by Florence Fontaine, both from "The Science of Sleep," create a unique world that blends edgy French culture with American pop culture. The music is by popular French musician Étienne Charry. Notably, August Darnell of the former Kid Creole and the Coconuts appears as Duke Ellington.
