Franklin Delano Roosevelt remains one of America's most popular presidents, rivaling the fame of Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. He is etched in American history as the only president to serve four terms, yet he also lived with severe disabilities that confined him to a wheelchair and harbored a secret love affair.
Amidst a pivotal era in history, director Roger Michell, known for "Notting Hill" and "The Proposal," brings to life the tender love story that unfolded between Roosevelt and his cousin and lover, Daisy, focusing on her gentle and sincere emotions. The film masterfully blends the charm of a love story with historical drama, seasoned with a light touch of humor.
Laura Linney, a three-time Academy Award nominee for films like "The Savages," portrays Daisy, the heroine whose name, like her namesake wildflower, suggests a quiet yet devoted love. Bill Murray embodies Roosevelt, a top leader commanding immense public support, yet also possessing a shrewd, pragmatic side as a man.
Daisy Witnesses the President's Secret
It was the 1930s, a time when America grappled with a prolonged recession and the looming shadow of war from Europe. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, worn down by the daily demands of his office, suffered from ill health. It was then that he found a kindred spirit in his cousin Daisy, who was invited to be his conversational companion, and a gentle romance began.
Daisy, who stayed by Franklin's side at his country estate amidst the lush natural surroundings, became his oasis. "When I'm with Daisy, I forget about the dark world situation," Franklin's words were the highest praise Daisy could ever receive.
Then, in 1939, as Britain entered the war, King George VI and his wife visited America to secure U.S. support. Franklin invited them to his estate. Late at night, Franklin engaged in a historic one-on-one summit with King George VI. Meanwhile, Daisy, anxious about the outcome of their talks and unable to sleep, inadvertently witnesses a secret of the President's that she never knew.—.
