Exquisite Cinematography Shining in Every Detail

Miguel Gomes captivated critics worldwide with his previous film, 'Our Beloved August.' This time, the setting shifts between the stark urban landscape of Portugal and the adventurous, grand vistas of colonial Africa. He has crafted a sophisticated melodrama that traces the present-day emptiness and passionate memories of an elderly woman.

To capture the atmosphere created by contrast, the film employs a variety of cinematic techniques down to the finest detail, including the now-rare combination of 35mm and 16mm film. This results in a visually stunning and emotionally resonant aesthetic.

The cast features Teresa Madruga, an internationally recognized actress, as Pilar, who strives to fulfill Aurora's wishes. Laura Soveral portrays Aurora, the elderly woman at the heart of the story. Both are acclaimed performers from Portugal.

Searching for Her Former Lover, Ventura

Pilar, spending her retirement years, is troubled by her neighbor Aurora, an eccentric 80-year-old woman with a short temper. However, when Aurora falls ill, she realizes her time is short and entrusts Pilar and Santa, a maid from Africa, with her wish to see her long-lost lover, Ventura.

The two set out to fulfill her wish. They eventually discover that Ventura is alive, but he is no longer the man he once was. Nevertheless, he begins to recount fragmented memories of what happened 50 years ago, at the dawn of the Portuguese Colonial War. "Aurora owned a farm at the foot of Tabu Mountain." Ventura and Aurora had made a promise back then..

A story of colonial Africa and passionate love, told through beloved songs of the 1960s. This is not a mere nostalgic look back, but a masterpiece where reminiscence evokes profound emotion.
