Wenders' First French-Language Film
Wim Wenders' latest film, "The Beautiful Days of Aranjuez," is set for a nationwide release starting in December. This is Wenders' first film made in the French language.
Selected for the official competition at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival, the film is Wenders' cinematic adaptation of a play by his longtime friend, the Austrian writer Peter Handke.
This is the fifth collaboration between Wenders and Handke, following "The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick" (1971), "The Wrong Move" (1975), and "Wings of Desire" (1987).
The original play's subtitle is "Summer Dialogue," and it unfolds entirely as a "dialogue between a man and a woman" on a terrace shaded by trees, with the Paris skyline visible in the distance across a wide plain on a beautiful summer day with a gentle breeze.
The conversations, touching on sexual experiences, childhood, memory, the essence of summer, and the differences between men and women, as well as feminine perspectives and masculine perceptions, are so striking they could be described as a duel or a Q&A game.
Wenders commented on the film, "This is the first film in my life that I have made exactly as I wanted."
