Director Jason Baffa Explores New Territory in His Ode to Surfing's Aesthetics

Director Jason Baffa, known for documentaries like "One California Day" that established the genre of "modern surfing film," brings "Bella Vita" to Japan. Shot against the backdrop of Italy, this is his latest work.

The protagonist is pro surfer and environmentalist Chris Del Moro, who, like Baffa, has Italian roots. By traveling to Italy, his ancestral homeland, Del Moro not only emotionally showcases the Italian way of life—cherishing family and culture—but also challenges the notion that "there are no good waves in the Mediterranean." He introduces the region's stunning seas and magnificent waves, captivating viewers.

Chris Del Moro, who grew up between Florence, Italy, and Los Angeles, California, decided to visit Tuscany, Italy—a place of cherished childhood summer memories—with his surfer friends.

Through surfing and art, they connect and gradually immerse themselves in Italy. Embracing the warm, familial hospitality of the Italians, Chris is deeply moved by the richness and depth of their wine and food culture, prompting him to reflect on the true meaning of life.

This film marks a new chapter for director Baffa, who has consistently pursued the aesthetics and ideals of surfing through his independent productions. "Bella Vita," which poses the question of "Bella Vita = The Beautiful Life" in Italian, invites viewers to reconsider its meaning.
