Cotillard Embodies an 'Ordinary Woman' in a Nearly Bare-Faced Performance

The Dardenne brothers, whose films including 'Rosetta' and 'The Child' have earned them the Palme d'Or, have achieved an unprecedented five consecutive major awards at the Cannes Film Festival. Their new film, 'Two Days, One Night,' tells the story of an everyday woman struggling in a situation where she must convince her colleagues to forgo their bonuses to save her job – a scenario highlighting that 'one's feelings cannot reach others unless voiced.'

The lead role of Sandra is played by French actress Marion Cotillard, also known as the muse for 'Dior.' For this film, she approached the role with minimal makeup, embodying the vulnerability, strength, sensitivity, and emotional nuances of an ordinary woman. Her husband, who supports Sandra, is portrayed with passion by Fabrizio Rongione, a staple in the Dardenne brothers' films. The cast also includes other Dardenne regulars like Olivier Gourmet and Morgan Marinne.

Bonus or Sandra?

Sandra, who had been on leave due to illness, is finally able to return to work. However, on the Friday before her scheduled return, her boss informs her of her dismissal.

The only way to avoid dismissal is if the majority of her 16 colleagues agree to give up their bonuses. Faced with a vote on Monday, Sandra, supported by her husband, spends the weekend trying to persuade her colleagues.

What words can move the human heart? Can one's life be weighed against goodwill? And will she be able to continue her job… The narrative unfolds with suspense, as everyone has their own circumstances and the future is uncertain. Embracing love and a sliver of hope, Sandra's long weekend begins.
