An American Furniture Icon Influencing 20th-Century Design
Founded in New York in 1938 by the 24-year-old German immigrant Hans G. Knoll, "Knoll" emerged with a design philosophy that blended the Bauhaus and Cranbrook movements, often described as having Bauhaus as its "father" and Cranbrook as its "mother."
Through groundbreaking collaborations with esteemed architects and designers such as Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, and Harry Bertoia, Knoll's legacy is so significant that it's said, "The history of Knoll is the history of American modern design itself." Its profound influence on 20th-century design is further evidenced by the more than 40 pieces permanently housed in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
To commemorate nearly half a century since its arrival in Japan, the "Knoll Store Aoyama Main Store" opened on August 20th (Wed). This first Japanese flagship store showcases furniture that embodies the essence of Knoll's design. The first floor presents the "Knoll Studio" collection, featuring timeless classics, alongside a curated selection of tableware, books, and art that create a modern ambiance. Custom-made sofas, combining Knoll Textiles, also popular as curtains, are available.
Meanwhile, the second floor features "Knoll Office," ideal for SOHO and office environments, proposing comfortable and sophisticated workspaces.
Knoll has adorned countless homes, offices, and public spaces with its refined furniture. This new store offers an opportunity to glimpse its rich history and discover your own favorite pieces.
