DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2011 | CASA Feature | Focus on Creators Born in the 1980s
Emerging Talents at Tokyo Midtown Hall, the Main Venue
Focus on Creators Born in the 1980s!
With "DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2011" just about a week away, this year's event promises an elevated experience with five distinct content areas: "TIDE Exhibition," "TIDE Market," "TIDE Extension," "TIDE Focus," and "TIDE Table." In our second feature, we turn our attention to the rising stars infusing the main venue with fresh energy through their vibrant sensibilities. We spotlight five individuals and groups born in the 1980s who exhibit unique approaches. Expectations are high for new creations, driven by what young talent can achieve, and what only they can do.

Discover Promising Young Creators at DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2011
mute | tartan
A familiar metal basket. A familiar checkered pattern. When familiar elements combine, they create something subtly unfamiliar. Yet, we recognize it, deep down. Born from the idea that the "almost there, but not quite"—the nostalgic yet new—strongly resonates with people, this piece was conceived. The unit name "mute" signifies "without sound," evoking something quiet and unobtrusive. It is through this stillness that more is conveyed, and our hearts are moved more deeply than usual.
mute | ミュート
Formed in 2008 by Kenji Ito (born 1983) and Takahiro Umino (born 1981). Both graduated from Kuwasawa Design School in 2007. They are broadly active, aiming to create objects that are quiet yet become an integral part of daily life.

PINTO | hollow stool / re_light
PINTO, a duo of designers, places great importance on conveying the intent of their designs to users and those involved in manufacturing. However, they feel that design possesses a power in aspects that are difficult to articulate or quantify—in those very ineffable qualities.
Even when communication is challenging, they strive to pursue and shape the honest feelings they experience as individuals living in the world. For this exhibition, they created works under the theme "like it."
PINTO | ピント
Formed in 2008 by Takamasa Hikima (born 1983) and Masayoshi Suzuki (born 1982). They have exhibited at DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2008, DESIGNEAST 00, DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2009, and participated as invited designers in TOYAMA DESIGN WAVE 2010.

un-do design | HANGER tree / katan-koton
"HANGER tree": Clothes and hangers scattered around a room are connected to form a single tree. The more the branches extend, the more it functions as a design element, expanding its potential into an art form that interacts with the space.
"Katan-koton": A box that rolls and changes shape. A design created through play. Inspired by traditional Japanese toys from the Edo period, it has been reconstructed. By drawing on history, a design beyond imagination has been born.
un-do design | アンドゥ デザイン
Formed in 2008 by Yasutaka Kimura (born 1982) and Rui Matsuo (born 1983). They are active in creating works that are easily understood and invite dialogue, using primitive materials and methods alongside contemporary expressions. They also handle displays and other projects.

Daisuke Kitagawa | Tolerance
The meaning of things constantly shifts and flows.
This has been true, and will continue to be so.
For that is the richness of the world.
Flexible existence. Shifting functions.
Daisuke Kitagawa | KITAGAWA Daisuke

Shuhei Fukuda | Knights of Round
An installation featuring a self-rotating clock, inspired by the sundial. In ancient times, sundials indicated the time through shadows cast by the sun's position. As civilization advanced, humans gained control over light through technology and no longer needed the sun to tell time. This is a continuously rotating device. At night, when room lights are turned on, the elongated shadows indicate the approximate time. The night takes on a new expression, one that feels both novel and familiar. Time flows eternally. The night, marked in a solemn circle.
Shuhei Fukuda | FUKUDA Shuuhei
Born in 1980 in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Based in Tokyo, he develops projects under the name "KOSHIMA TAMOTSU." Exhibited at DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2008 "TIDE Exhibition."
