Introducing the Fiat 500e, Fiat's First BEV Inheriting an Iconic Design
Stellantis Japan has announced the launch of the Cinquecento e, Fiat's first all-electric vehicle (BEV). It will go on sale on Saturday, June 25, 2022.
A Completely New Design, While Retaining the Image of the Traditional 500
The Cinquecento is now a BEV. The Cinquecento e is a completely new design that inherits the image of the traditional 500. Two body variations are available: a 3-door hatchback and a cabriolet with an electric retractable soft top, offered in three models.
The powertrain features an electric motor with a maximum output of 87kW (118ps) and a maximum torque of 220Nm. A 42kWh lithium-ion battery is integrated under the floor, contributing to a lower center of gravity. Despite its compact size, the cruising range reaches up to 335km in WLTC mode. Charging is compatible with standard 200V charging and rapid charging via the included CHAdeMO adapter.
Three driving modes are available: "NORMAL," which offers a responsive pedal feel akin to a gasoline-powered car; "RANGE," which enhances regenerative braking for strong deceleration simply by releasing the accelerator, simulating braking; and "SHERPA," an eco-mode that maximizes cruising range by reducing energy consumption through controlled accelerator response and disabling features like seat heating.
The Cinquecento e retains the characteristic playfulness of the Cinquecento, even as a BEV. The interior features design elements such as monogram seat upholstery bearing the Fiat logo and a smartphone tray depicting the cityscape of Turin.
The sound of the vehicle proximity notification system also received special attention, adopting an original melody composed by Nino Rota, the Italian composer renowned for his work on numerous films by the master Federico Fellini. This pleasant melody alerts pedestrians to the vehicle's approach.
The 500e is also equipped with comprehensive driver assistance features. Standard equipment includes a collision damage mitigation brake system capable of detecting not only preceding vehicles but also pedestrians and cyclists, as well as lane departure warning and a rear parking camera.
Pricing starts at 4.5 million yen for the "Pop," an entry-level hatchback model available by order; 4.85 million yen for the higher-grade "Icon"; and 4.95 million yen for the "Open" cabriolet.
