Citroën Unveils Flagship C5 X in World Premiere
Citroën unveiled its new flagship model, the C5 X, on April 12. The company states that its unique design, combining a saloon and a station wagon, along with the availability of both gasoline and plug-in hybrid versions, expresses the modernity, status, and innovation expected by customers seeking large-segment or SUV-segment vehicles.
Recreating Citroën's Signature "Magic Carpet" Ride
The C5 X, which belongs to the European D-segment, measures 4,805mm in length, 1,865mm in width, and 1,485mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,785mm. Its exterior features a fastback body style that fuses a saloon and a station wagon with the addition of appealing SUV elements. The long bonnet, flowing aerodynamic lines, high waistline, and kick-up over the rear wheels are said to evoke various cars that have graced Citroën's top-range history.
Furthermore, the increased ground clearance compared to conventional saloons and the large 720mm diameter wheels (fitted with 19-inch tall and narrow tires on most versions) provide a higher driving position, favored by SUV users, enhancing safety and visibility. The front and rear feature Citroën's new V-shaped light signature.
Inside, the C5 X features Advanced Comfort seats with high-density foam and a specific structure, offering a comfortable seating experience akin to relaxing in a living room and ensuring passengers feel refreshed even after long journeys.
The rear area is also spacious, with 360-degree glass surfaces, a large-opening glass sunroof, and sound-insulated laminated windows, all contributing to a relaxing atmosphere for occupants. The luggage compartment, equipped with a hands-free electric tailgate, offers a standard capacity of 545 liters, expandable to 1,640 liters with the rear seats folded.
The powertrain options include a gasoline engine and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) producing 225ps. The ZEV mode offers a range of 50km and a top speed of 135km/h.
The suspension features Citroën Advanced Comfort suspension for the gasoline models, recreating the brand's signature "magic carpet" ride. The PHEV model is equipped with an even more advanced active suspension, providing a sensation of gliding over the road.
In terms of advanced features, it incorporates a full-color, large head-up display, representing the first step into augmented reality (AR). For driver assistance, it is equipped with a system offering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving, utilizing radar, cameras, and sensors positioned around the vehicle.
European sales are scheduled to begin in the latter half of 2021.
