BMW has completely redesigned the X2 series and begun accepting orders. At the "Japan Mobility Show 2023" held at Tokyo Big Sight, the "X2" and the all-new BEV model "iX2" made their world premiere.
BEV model and "X2 M35i xDrive" incorporating circuit technology also in the lineup
The automotive festival, held for the first time in four years, has changed its name from the "Tokyo Motor Show" to the "Japan Mobility Show." BMW unveiled the newly redesigned "X2" and the all-new BEV model "iX2" to the world.
The X2, the first-generation premium small compact SAC (Sports Activity Coupe), was born in 2018. This second-generation new model features a bold redesign of its interior and exterior, and in addition to the BEV model, it will also offer the "X2 M35i xDrive," an M Performance model that incorporates technology cultivated on the circuit, even with its gasoline engine.
First to catch the eye is the boldly redesigned front, with its large kidney grille and distinctive adaptive LED headlights creating a powerful and sharp impression. The rear features horizontal character lines that emphasize width and power, along with three-dimensional LED combination lights.
Inside, the BMW Curved Display is adopted, which integrates the instrument cluster and control display into a large screen, tilted towards the driver for improved visibility and touch operation. The "BMW Operating System 9.0," a first for a BMW model, is also installed, with both designed for consistent operation via touch display and voice.
Furthermore, the elimination of the shift lever and the integration of all controls into the center armrest create a modern impression. The center console also offers convenience, such as charging for smartphones placed there.
The X2 series will be available in two gasoline models and the BEV "iX2," for a total of three models. Both gasoline engine models are equipped with a 2-liter, four-cylinder twin-turbo engine.
The "X2 M35i xDrive" is a performance model that enhances driving dynamics by fully incorporating technology cultivated through rigorous circuit driving, producing a maximum output of 233 kW and a maximum torque of 400 Nm.
Furthermore, by pulling the left paddle shifter for one second, the M Sport Boost function can be activated, switching all powertrain and chassis systems to their sportiest settings. BMW states that combining this with the 7-speed double-clutch transmission, the "xDrive" all-wheel-drive system, the mechanical limited-slip differential, and the adaptive M suspension allows for a more dynamic driving experience.
The BEV "iX2 xDrive30 M Sport" is an all-wheel-drive model with motors on both the front and rear wheels, delivering a combined system output of 200 kW and 494 Nm of torque, achieving 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. The lithium-ion battery, housed beneath the floor, has a capacity of 66.5 kWh, providing a driving range of 417-449 km.
Safety features include the "Traffic Jam Assistant with Hands-off Function," which helps reduce driver workload in highway traffic jams, "Collision Warning and Mitigation Brake," and "Accelerator Pedal Misapplication Prevention." The "Reversing Assistant Function," which records the route taken for up to 50 meters when moving forward at speeds below 35 km/h and can accurately reverse along the same path, is also standard equipment.
The prices for the X2 series are 6.28 million yen for the "X2 xDrive20i M Sport," 8.10 million yen for the "X2 M35i xDrive," and 7.42 million yen for the BEV "iX2 xDrive30 M Sport." Deliveries for all models are scheduled to begin in 2024 or later.
At the "Japan Mobility Show 2023," which runs until November 5th at Tokyo Big Sight, BMW also showcased other vehicles, including the "Vision Neue Klasse," a new design concept that made its world premiere at "IAA Mobility 2023" in September.
