Mercedes-Benz has announced its intention to transition 100% of its passenger car fleet to electric vehicles as soon as the market allows. Amidst this, the 'Concept EQG,' a concept car the company claims is nearing mass production readiness, made its Japanese debut.
Toni Menzel, G-Class Product Manager at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, visited Japan for the premiere and commented as follows:
"We aim to unite the two strongest pillars: the timeless, bold character of the 'G' and the DNA of Mercedes' EQ technology. The 'Concept EQG' offers a glimpse into the results of this fusion at this very moment."
The design retains the G-Class's robust style, but features illuminated strips on the protective moldings and a two-tone body color, offering a distinct presentation compared to internal combustion engine models.
The front adopts a deep black panel with a three-dimensional effect in place of the internal combustion engine model's grille, while distinctive circular headlights and a luminous three-pointed star emphasize its electric identity.
The vehicle is equipped with specially designed 22-inch wheels, and the rear end features a lockable box with a white illuminated accent in place of the usual spare tire cover. This box can also store charging cables.
Another striking exterior feature is the high-gloss black, flat roof rack. When viewed from above, it forms the letter 'G,' and a white LED strip integrated into the front of the rack is a modern interpretation of the searchlights essential for extreme off-roading.
The G-Class, also known by its German nickname "Geländewagen" meaning off-road vehicle, retains its off-roader characteristics even as a BEV. The body structure continues to utilize a ladder frame, and the suspension is designed for off-road capability.
The front features independent suspension, while the rear is equipped with a newly developed rigid axle to accommodate the electric drive system. Four electric motors are positioned very close to each wheel and can be controlled individually.
The battery is integrated into the ladder frame, contributing to a lower center of gravity. As BEVs generate maximum torque from the moment they start moving, the Concept EQG boasts exceptional driving force and control, demonstrating its power on steep slopes and deep mountain trails.
In addition to the 'EQG,' Mercedes-Benz also held the Japan premiere of the 'Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE.' Other electric models were also on display.
The "Japan Mobility Show 2023" is being held at Tokyo Big Sight until Sunday, November 5th.
