The Legendary Renault Compact Hatch Reimagined as an EV
On February 26th, local time, Renault held the world premiere of its electric vehicle (BEV), the "Renault 5 E-TECH Electric," at the Geneva International Motor Show.
Introduction to Japan Under Consideration
A BEV inheriting the concept of Renault's legendary compact hatch, the "Renault 5," was unveiled to the world.
Introduced in France in 1972, a time of great change, the "Renault 5" was a groundbreaking compact hatch. In French, "5" is pronounced "cinq," and it was affectionately known as the "Renault Cinq" in Japan.
Also known for being the first model to feature resin bumpers, its simple yet distinctive and stylish design continues to garner support from many fans to this day.
At the Geneva International Motor Show, Renault unveiled the "Renault 5 E-TECH Electric," a compact hatch befitting the 21st century, a new era of transition, reimagined as an EV.
Renault describes it as a next-generation compact car born from the "Renaulution" revival strategy, symbolizing the brand's commitment to electrification.
With dimensions of 3.92m in length, 1.77m in width, and 1.50m in height, it fits the B-segment size. Two types of lithium-ion batteries are available, offering a maximum range of 400km for the 52kWh version and 300km for the 40kWh version. The top speed is 150km/h, with 0-100km/h acceleration in 8 seconds.
Renault developed a new dedicated platform for B-segment BEVs for this model. This platform enables a flat floor, a long wheelbase (2.54m), and ample interior and luggage space (326L). Furthermore, it achieves a low center of gravity and a curb weight under 1500kg, which is light for a BEV with a large battery capacity.
Renault Japan is considering introducing the "Renault 5 E-TECH Electric" to the Japanese market.
More than half a century after its birth, the "Renault Cinq" is reborn. We await further news on whether it will indeed be introduced in Japan.
