Aiming for a Carbon-Neutral Society
Lexus launched the new RZ, its first dedicated Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) model, on March 30.
Achieving a Range of 494km
The RZ, launched as Lexus's first dedicated BEV model, embodies the Lexus driving experience and design that appeals to the senses, made possible by electrification technology. It is poised to be the starting point for the brand's transformation centered on BEVs.
By adopting the dedicated BEV platform "e-TNGA," the RZ achieves ideal inertial properties through optimal placement of the battery and motors, along with a lightweight, highly rigid body, resulting in significant advancements in fundamental vehicle performance.
Furthermore, it employs the "DIRECT4" all-wheel-drive system utilizing electrification technology, delivering a satisfying driving feel that integrates driver and car. The vehicle also pursues a sound design that naturally communicates changes in the car's condition to the driver.
These refinements were developed at "Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama," Lexus's new development base, evolving the "Lexus Driving Signature"—Lexus's unique driving feel.
The exterior, measuring 4,805mm in length, 1,895mm in width, and 1,635mm in height, adopts a solid "spindle body" design that leverages the characteristics of BEVs, which do not require cooling for internal combustion engines, to express seamless acceleration and dynamic torque.
The interior, considering SDGs and sustainable mobility, achieves a space that conveys meticulous craftsmanship and quality, without relying on luxurious finishes or decorations.
Additionally, it features a panoramic roof that provides an open-feeling space and a highly efficient heating system with coordinated control of air conditioning, including radiant heat, to reduce energy consumption.
The powertrain consists of twin motors: 150kW (204ps) / 266Nm at the front and 80kW (109ps) / 169Nm at the rear. The battery has a total capacity of 71.4kWh, achieving a driving range of 494km (J-WLTC mode, with 20-inch wheels).
The price for the Version L (AWD) is 8.8 million yen, with the "First Edition" special specification model, limited to the first 500 units, priced at 9.4 million yen.
Introducing Owner-Exclusive Services to Alleviate BEV Concerns
In conjunction with the launch of the RZ450e and the improvements to the UX300e, Lexus also launched the "Lexus Electrified Program" (LEP), an exclusive service for owners designed to alleviate concerns related to BEVs, starting March 30.
Specifically, by assigning at least one "BEV Concierge" at each of the 183 dealerships nationwide, who are well-versed in BEV vehicles and charging equipment, Lexus addresses customer concerns and issues during the purchase consideration and usage phases. For vehicle usage, the Lexus Owners Desk provides support via phone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Each dealership is equipped with a 50kW charger, and "Lexus Charging Stations" with high-speed chargers of 150kW or more are being established at commercial facilities and other locations to contribute to infrastructure expansion. Furthermore, the purchase of a BEV includes complimentary support for the original home charging unit and installation costs.
Special travel experiences designed to enrich the BEV lifestyle, such as "Lexus Experiences," are also offered.
In parallel, Lexus has established the "Lexus Battery 3R (Rebuild, Reuse, Recycle) Program" to create a sustainable system for producing BEV batteries.
A contribution of 200,000 yen for new BEVs or 100,000 yen for CPO vehicles is provided at the time of trade-in or purchase, and by utilizing these batteries for the 3R program, Lexus contributes to the realization of a carbon-neutral society without producing unnecessary batteries.
