Over 160km Range
This model, designed and engineered exclusively for electric power, is comparable in size to a 1800cc gasoline car. It arrives as a spacious five-seater hatchback in the C-segment, similar to the Volkswagen Golf and Nissan Tiida.
The powertrain features a compact laminated lithium-ion battery (mounted under the floor) producing over 90kW, and an electric motor delivering 80kW/280Nm. Naturally, it emits no CO2 or other exhaust gases while driving, yet offers responsiveness and driving enjoyment comparable to conventional gasoline cars.
A full charge provides a real-world range of over 160km (100 miles). Charging takes under 30 minutes to reach 80% capacity using a quick charger, or approximately 8 hours for a full charge from 0% using a 200V home charger.
Sales Scheduled for Late 2010
The center console monitor displays estimated driving range based on charging status and remaining energy, as well as the location of charging stations. Furthermore, the air conditioning and charging functions can be remotely operated via mobile phone, even when the car is switched off. The remote control timer also allows pre-setting of charging start times.
While pricing has yet to be announced, the company is considering a sales model where the vehicle's body price is set equivalent to that of an 1800cc class gasoline car in the C-segment, with the expensive battery offered on a lease basis. The monthly battery lease fee, combined with charging costs, is expected to be less than the annual gasoline expenses.
Sales of the "Leaf" are slated to begin in late 2010, with plans for release not only in Japan but also in North America and Europe.
