New C4 Hatchback Model Announced
Group PSA Japan has announced the new Citroën C4 and the E-C4 Electric, the first BEV from Citroën in Japan. Sales will begin on Saturday, January 22, 2022.
A BEV Model Also Appears in Japan
The Citroën C-segment hatchback, bearing a name with a tradition dating back to the C4 introduced in 1928, has returned. The exterior, while a hatchback, adds SUV-like robustness and individuality, inspired by the "C-Xperience" concept unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Key features include a bold front design flowing from the iconic double chevron, a higher eye-point provided by large wheels and increased ground clearance, and a gently sloping roofline reminiscent of the legendary Citroën GS.
Inside, all models feature Advanced Comfort seats. First introduced in the C5 Aircross SUV and also found in the C3, these seats have thicker foam padding that absorbs micro-vibrations from the car body, reducing fatigue.
Despite the coupe-like flowing roofline in the rear, the lining shape has been optimized. Citroën claims that head clearance is ensured, allowing four adults to travel comfortably.
In addition to gasoline and diesel models, the powertrain lineup includes a BEV, the first for Citroën in Japan. Citroën states that by offering the same trim levels across different powertrains, the driving experience, functions, equipment, and space are equivalent, allowing users to choose freely based on their lifestyle, usage, and preferences.
To accommodate this, the latest generation compact platform, "CMP," which supports various powertrains, has been used with an extended wheelbase.
The BEV powertrain features a motor with a maximum output of 100 kW (136 hp) and 260 Nm of torque, paired with a 50 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, providing a WLTC range of 405 km. Drive modes include Sport, Normal, and Eco, and two levels of regenerative braking intensity can be selected.
The battery pack, composed of 18 modules each weighing approximately 13.1 kg, has a total volume of about 220 liters and weighs around 350 kg. It is arranged in an H-shape beneath the front and rear seats, ensuring interior space comparable to internal combustion engine models.
The gasoline engine is a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder turbo producing 96 kW (130 hp) and 230 Nm of torque. The diesel engine is a 1.5-liter turbo producing 96 kW (130 hp) and 300 Nm of torque. Both are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The suspension across all models features PHC (Progressive Hydraulic Cushions), a modern interpretation of Citroën's signature suspension, often described as a "magic carpet ride."
Safety features include Active Control, Active Safety Brake, and for the first time in a Citroën, Post-Collision Safety Brake to mitigate secondary collision risks in the event of an accident.
Body colors include four options such as Bleu Iceland and Gris Platinium. Prices start at ¥2,900,000 for gasoline models and ¥3,250,000. Diesel models are ¥3,450,000, and the E-C4 Electric is ¥4,650,000.
