The Second Gran Coupe

"3 SeriesCoupe" successor model, the "Detroit Motor Show" 4 Series" appeared at the4 Series" has quickly been joined by its four-door coupe counterpart, the "4 Series Gran Coupe". Details of this new model have now been revealed. This marks the third model in the 4 Series lineup, following the "4 Series Convertible".

The model BMW has named "Gran Coupe" is the second such vehicle, following the four-door coupe version of the "6 Series," the "6 Series Gran Coupe". Its defining characteristic is the preservation of the coupe's sporty body lines while enhancing rear-seat accessibility.

The body dimensions are identical to the coupe model: 4,638mm in length, 1,825mm in width, and a wheelbase of 2,810mm. By shortening the front doors, the four-door configuration is achieved. The overall height has been increased by 12mm to 1,370mm to ensure sufficient rear headroom. Simultaneously, the roofline has been set back by 112mm, successfully maintaining the coupe-like silhouette.

Furthermore, the trunk capacity is 480 liters, an increase of 35 liters compared to the coupe. The rear seats are split 40:20:40 and can be folded down, offering a maximum cargo space of 1,300 liters. The addition of a hatch gate, absent in the sedan, is also a significant design feature.

The engine options are the same as the current 4 Series, with three gasoline engines available. The flagship "435i Gran Coupe" features a 3.0-liter inline-six gasoline turbo engine, producing a maximum output of 225kW (306ps) and peak torque of 400Nm (40.8kgm). The "428i Gran Coupe" is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-four gasoline turbo engine, delivering a maximum output of 180kW (245ps) and peak torque of 350Nm (35.7kgm).

The entry-level "420i Gran Coupe" uses the same 2.0-liter inline-four gasoline turbo engine as the "420i" coupe model recently announced in Japan, producing a maximum output of 135kW (184ps) and peak torque of 270Nm (27.5kgm).

Meanwhile, two diesel engines are offered. The "420d Gran Coupe" features a 2.0-liter inline-four turbo engine with a maximum output of 135kW (184ps) and peak torque of 380Nm (38.7kgm). The "418d Gran Coupe" is powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four turbo engine, delivering a maximum output of 105kW (143ps) and peak torque of 320Nm (32.6kgm). All engines meet the EU6 emissions standard.

The transmission options for all models include a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed sports automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but the all-wheel-drive "428i xDrive" and "420d xDrive" are available as options.

For acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h, the "435i" with the 3.0-liter inline-six gasoline turbo engine achieves it in 5.1 seconds, while the "435i Gran Coupe" with the same engine takes 5.2 seconds. Although slightly slower due to the addition of two doors, the difference is minimal, and it remains exceptionally quick.

Exterior specifications, like the current 4 Series, include the "SPORT" line emphasizing sportiness, the elegant "Luxury" line, and the "M Sport" package featuring M Sport suspension and M aerodynamics. The "M Sport" is also available.

The interior is largely unchanged from the coupe. As mentioned, rear-seat comfort is significantly improved due to the increased overall height, offering ample space for a four-door coupe. In terms of functional equipment, the "Driving Assistant" is standard, incorporating features like forward collision warning and lane departure warning, which utilize radar and cameras to support the driver. It also supports the cutting-edge telematics service "BMW ConnectedDrive", which connects the car with information from devices like smartphones via a communication network.

For owners who desire the sportiness of a coupe but also value the practicality of a four-door sedan, and perhaps prefer a more compact size, the 4 Series Gran Coupe presents a compelling new option.
