The second generation of the 4-door coupe, suited for Japan's road conditions, has arrived.

On the 5th, BMW held a launch event for the "2 Series Gran Coupe," which has undergone a full model change to its second generation, at the brand store "FREUDE by BMW" in Azabudai Hills, Tokyo. Sales in Japan also began on the same day, with deliveries scheduled to start from March this year.
Mild Hybrid Models and M Performance Models Round Out the Lineup
The "2 Series Gran Coupe," which marks its first full model change in five years since its debut as BMW's first four-door coupe in 2019, has now been introduced to Japan.
The "2 Series Gran Coupe," which BMW positions in the premium small compact segment, features dimensions of 4,550mm in length, 1,800mm in width, and 1,435mm in height. These dimensions are designed to fit well with Japan's road conditions and parking spaces.
The lineup consists of three variants: the "220" with a 1.5-liter gasoline turbo engine, the "220d" with a diesel turbo engine, and the "M235 xDrive" with a 2.0-liter gasoline turbo engine, whose performance has been enhanced with technology derived from circuit racing.
Both the "220" and "220d" are equipped with a 7-speed AT transmission and a 48V mild hybrid system. The "220" delivers a total system output of 125kW and 280Nm of torque, while the "220d" produces 120kW and 400Nm.
The "M235 xDrive" features a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline turbo engine tuned for a maximum output of 221kW and 400Nm of torque.
Furthermore, performance is enhanced by the "7-speed double-clutch transmission with M Sport Boost function," which switches all powertrain and chassis systems to their sportiest settings by pulling the left paddle shifter for one second, along with the xDrive all-wheel-drive system and "Adaptive M Suspension."
The exterior features sharp and sporty LED adaptive headlights at the front, while the rear emphasizes width and power with horizontal character lines and three-dimensional, impactful LED rear combination lights, showcasing its presence.
Inside, the meter panel and control display are integrated and enlarged, angled towards the driver for improved visibility. The shift lever has been eliminated, with all controls housed in the center armrest for a more modern feel. The rear seats are said to offer space for three adults.
The interface runs on the BMW Operating System 9, featuring a home screen with function icons arranged on the driver's side. Combined with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, operation is seamlessly handled via the touch display and voice commands.
The "Hands-Off Driving Assistant for Traffic Jams" allows for hands-free driving on highways in congested conditions and is standard on the "M235xDrive Gran Coupe." Additionally, Active Cruise Control and the Reversing Assistant, which can accurately retrace the vehicle's path for up to 50 meters, are standard on all models.
Safety features include a lane change warning system, unintended acceleration prevention function, and collision avoidance/damage mitigation brakes, all as standard equipment.
Pricing is set at 5.28 million yen for the gasoline-powered "220 Gran Coupe M Sport," 5.48 million yen for the diesel-powered "220d Gran Coupe M Sport," and 7.34 million yen for the high-performance "M235xDrive Gran Coupe."
