Fiat Panda: Finally Arriving in Japan

Overall length 3,405 x width 1,510 x height 1,485mm──The first-generation Fiat "Panda," a representative of the small hatchback cars in the A-segment, was produced with only minor changes from 1980 to 2003.

In 2003, the car originally developed under the name "Gingo" inherited the name of the second-generation Panda. Because the Gingo was designed as an SUV or MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle), it became a tall 5-door hatchback, unlike the first-generation 3-door hatchback. This second-generation Panda won the European Car of the Year in 2004.

The third generation, unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011, began production in the latter half of 2011, and alreadyFour-wheel drive modelappeared inParis Motor Showin 2012.

This is the third generation that has been introduced to Japan this time. With dimensions of 3,650mm in length, 1,640mm in width, and 1,550mm in height, it is larger than the first generation, but it remains a compact hatchback model and, like the second generation, is a 5-door. The base is shared with the "500" and Chrysler's "Ypsilon", but it inherits the versatile concept of the second generation. The luggage space, normally 225 liters, can be expanded to 260 liters by pushing the rear seats forward, and to 870 liters by folding them down, offering a spacious interior.

In Japan, it will be available as the "Easy" model equipped with the familiar 0.9-liter 2-cylinder turbo engine "TwinAir" (maximum output 63kW (85ps) / 5,500 rpm, maximum torque 145Nm (14.8kgm) / 1,900 rpm), featuring a start-stop system and an ECO mode switch. The fuel efficiency is an excellent 18.4 km/ℓ. The transmission is a 5-speed sequential "Dualogic." The selling price is 2.08 million yen. OPENERS plans to publish a test drive review of this Panda.
