Mobility in the Not-So-Distant Future

Centered in Europe, efforts to achieve zero CO2 emissions in urban areas are gaining momentum, and this has already taken on a psychological, even cultural, aspect for people. The future mobility that responds to this situation is being proposed by various brands such asVolkswagen,Mercedes-Benz,Jaguar,Citroën, as we have introduced on OPENERS.

Among these movements, one of the leading brands is BMW. At last year's Tokyo Motor Show, many of you may have witnessed"BMW i3" and "BMW i8".

More details about the cars can be found inas previously reported, but the "i3" is an electric vehicle with a range of 130 to 160 km, achieving zero-emission driving in urban areas. The "i8" is a hybrid sports car that achieves 35 km of electric-only range, also enabling zero-emission driving in urban areas, but for longer distances, it also utilizes a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine.

Both are completely new models designed from the ground up, with manufacturing planned to utilize renewable energy and achieve thorough low environmental impact, including recycling. They are scheduled to be released in the Japanese market in 2014.

The "BMW i. BORN ELECTRIC TOUR.," held at "Tokyo City View" on the 52nd floor of Roppongi Hills Mori Tower from tomorrow, October 6th to 8th, is an event where you can fully experience the world of the "i series." True to the urban character of the i series, the tour is visiting seven major cities worldwide: Rome, Düsseldorf, New York, London, Paris, Shanghai, and Tokyo, with Tokyo being the third stop.

The Form of a Car Integrated with Life

At a press preview ahead of the event, Kai Langer, the exterior designer for the i series, also took the stage and explained the i8. He emphasized not only the efficient and sporty appearance that reduces air resistance and technologies like ecological laser lights, but also the interior design that invites and relaxes the occupants.

Furthermore, from Japan, Mori Building, as well as teamLab andReverse Projectare participating as partners, with the latter two exhibiting their respective works. At the press conference, Yusuke Iseya, representative of Reverse Project and a familiar face on OPENERS, gave a speech and announced the unveiling of "Airbag Bag," a bag made from recycled airbags and seatbelts, which are typically not recycled, and a down jacket utilizing airbags, at this event.
