Low-Emission Models Arrive in Japan

42nd Tokyo Motor Showwhich was also exhibited at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show, with sales starting in 2013 and the compact EV "BMW i3", and the clean diesel engine SUV "BMW X5 35d BluePerformance", and in the futureintroduction to the 3 Series", andupdates to the 7 Series"ActiveHybrid" series equipped with hybrid powertrains, as well as the clean diesel models of the 3 Series and 5 Series planned for introduction in sedan and touring models, BMW is actively introducing models to the Japanese market that balance driving pleasure with low CO2 emissions.

Furthermore, many are likely aware that in Germany, the car-sharing service "DriveNow" has been operating since April 2011 to realize a sustainable automotive society. In Japan, from a similar perspective, MINI and 1 Series vehicles have been provided to Times 24's "TimesPLUS" since July 2010, with 144 vehicles deployed nationwide as of the end of April 2012.

ActiveE Paves the Way for the i3

The BMW electric vehicle "BMW ActiveE," announced this time, is being introduced here. A total of 1,000 units were produced worldwide, with 5 units arriving in Japan. One unit is a test vehicle, and the remaining 4 units will be operated by TimesPLUS: specifically, two at Times Station Ito-ya, one at Times Station Ikebukuro, and one at Times Station Yokohama Yamashitacho.

The base vehicle is a coupe model from the first generation of the BMW 1 Series. The battery cells and electric motor installed are similar to those of the aforementioned "i3".

The motor and transmission are installed on the rear axle, driving the rear wheels. Because the drive system is located above them, the trunk capacity is reduced from the normal 370 liters to 200 liters.

The front, with its raised hood, houses the battery instead of an engine.

Even as an EV, the front-rear weight distribution achieves a balance close to BMW's characteristic 50:50. The cruising range is approximately 160 km. It is only available in left-hand drive, and there are no plans for commercialization.

Charging is done at Times locations, so in-use charging is not possible. TimesPLUS members, now numbering over 110,000, can use it through the same procedure as other vehicles.
