Spacious Interior Achieved Through Efficient Packaging
The "Fit Shuttle" was originally slated for a mid-March release. However, following the Great East Japan Earthquake and considering the power shortages in the Tokyo Electric Power Company's service area, production was moved from the Saitama Plant in Sayama City, Saitama Prefecture, to the Suzuka Plant in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture. This resulted in a three-month delay to its market launch.
The Fit Shuttle is based on the "Fit" chassis, with its length extended by approximately 500mm to create a 5-number class body measuring 4,410mm in length, 1,695mm in width, and 1,540mm in height. Its packaging is particularly noteworthy: thanks to the center tank layout adopted from the Fit, the gasoline version offers a combined cargo space of 427 liters above and below the floor. In comparison, the Fit Shuttle boasts a generous 590 liters. Even the hybrid version maintains a cargo capacity of 517 liters, offering more space than typically found in its compact class.
Hybrid Achieves 30 km/L Fuel Economy
The powertrain for the gasoline model is a 1.5-liter I-VTEC engine, producing a maximum output of 88kW (120ps) at 6,600rpm and a peak torque of 145Nm (14.8kgm) at 4,800rpm, which is more than sufficient for a compact car. The hybrid model employs a series hybrid system with a 1.3-liter I-VTEC + IMA. The engine delivers a maximum output of 65kW (88ps) at 5,800rpm and a peak torque of 121Nm (12.3kgm) at 4,500rpm, while the electric motor provides a maximum output of 10kW (14ps) at 1,500rpm and a peak torque of 78Nm (8.0kgm) at 1,000rpm. Both versions have undergone thorough reductions in engine friction loss and front brake rotational resistance to improve fuel efficiency. The FF gasoline model achieves 20.0 km/L in the 10-15 mode, the 4WD model achieves 16.4 km/L, and the hybrid model reaches an impressive 30.0 km/L. For reference, the Toyota Prius α, a close competitor to the Fit Hybrid,Toyota Prius αachieves 31.0 km/L, nearly the same.
The exterior design, while drawing from the "Fit," features a distinctive, flowing form characteristic of a wagon. Inside, the front seats utilize seat frames from mid-class vehicles to ensure a refined ride quality.
The gasoline models are available in two grades: "15C" and "15X." The hybrid models come in four grades: "Hybrid-C," "Hybrid," "Smart Selection," and "Navi Premium Selection." To differentiate from the gasoline versions, the hybrid models feature exclusive exterior styling, including a front grille with clear blue plating and an acrylic cover, conveying a sophisticated and clean image.
Color options include Green Opal Metallic, which is exclusive to the hybrid model and scheduled for production starting this October, along with Premium White Pearl and Crystal Black Pearl, totaling eight colors. The interior can be chosen in either a black and brown combination or beige.
The "Fit Shuttle" offers the best of both worlds: an interior space that feels larger than its compact car dimensions suggest, combined with the excellent fuel efficiency characteristic of compact cars. As expected from a Japanese manufacturer, it has been crafted into a vehicle perfectly suited for driving in Japan.
