iQ EV: 105km Range

Toyota's announcement details the deployment of two Prius PHVs and two EVs to each of three planned condominiums: 'Proud Komaba' and 'Proud Suginami Wada' in Tokyo, and 'Villas Hoshigaoka no Mori' in Aichi, totaling six vehicles.

The Prius PHV, slated for commercial release by early 2012, can be charged using conventional household power and is capable of 23.4km (JC08 mode) of electric-only driving on a full charge. Apart from its plug-in capability, it shares most features with the conventional Prius, including the same engine.

Details of Toyota's EV, previously undisclosed, have finally been revealed. While specifics remain unpublished, the new EV is based on the iQ and is being developed for a market launch in 2012. Positioned for short-distance urban travel, its estimated range on a full charge is approximately 105km (Toyota's internal measurement based on JC08 mode).

This announcement offers a glimpse into Toyota's future vehicle lineup. For EVs, the strategy is not to extend range but to differentiate by offering plug-in hybrids for longer journeys. Indeed, the iQ-based EV has a shorter range than the Nissan Leaf (200km) and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV (160km).

With a growing number of urban residents opting out of car ownership, and in response to the need for reduced oil consumption and measures against global warming, this car-sharing initiative with PHVs and EVs aims to increase opportunities for people to drive and experience the convenience and comfort of these vehicles.

Information regarding usage fees has not yet been released.
