The Tandem EV is Finally Going on Sale!

Renault has announced the sales lineup for its tandem EV, the Twizy, which had its price revealed at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, and simultaneously began accepting reservations on its website.

At the March 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the Renault tandem EV "Twizy" was announced with a European sales price starting from €6,990 (approx. ¥800,000). Renault has now released further details.

First, there is the lower-spec model, the "Twizy 45." The "45" denotes its top speed, making it a model targeted at younger customers in some countries who can drive it without a car license. This will be sold at the previously announced price of €6,990. Additionally, a monthly battery lease contract is required for purchase, costing €45.

The "Twizy," which reaches a top speed of 80 km/h, is equipped with a motor that produces a maximum output of 17 hp. While details are not fully disclosed, it comes in two versions, "Urban" and "Technic," priced at €7,690 (approx. ¥900,000) for the former and €8,490 (approx. ¥980,000) for the latter. The cost for the battery lease for these models is €49.

The Twizy's selling points include its agile and powerful performance despite being a two-seater tandem model. Other advantages are its superior safety compared to scooters, and the quietness and comfort achieved by minimizing the sound of the electric motor.

Like contemporary electric vehicles, the Twizy can be charged from a household power outlet. Charging is completed in approximately 3.5 hours, and it can travel up to approximately 100 km on a single charge.

Furthermore, a range of options are available to enhance its practicality. These include a semi-rigid bag with a 50-liter capacity, a protector to shield against wind, rain, and cold, a USB connector for Apple devices like the iPod, and rear parking sensors.

Reservations for the Twizy are being accepted on Renault's domestic website within the "RENAULT Z.E." page, which showcases their electric vehicles. A deposit of €20 is required for reservations. The vehicle is set to launch in Europe around the end of 2011, with manufacturing taking place at their own factory in Spain. Currently, pre-orders are also open for the sedan-type EV "Fluence Z.E." and the "Kangoo Van Z.E.," based on Renault's signature minivan, the Kangoo.

This could be said to mark the beginning of Renault's new endeavor.
