The Latest C-Class Model: C350 Plug-in Hybrid
The North American International Auto Show, held in Detroit, USA, from January 14, 2015. The press days began on the 12th, ahead of the public opening. Among the reveals, Mercedes-Benz's announcement of numerous new models is likely to capture the attention of Japanese readers.
Mercedes-Benz showcased a comprehensive range of models, from ultra-luxury sedans to autonomous concept cars. First up is the Mercedes-Benz C350 Plug-in Hybrid, slated for introduction to the Japanese market in 2015.C-Class's latest model.
It employs a hybrid system combining a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, featuring a 155kW, 349Nm engine paired with an electric motor producing 340Nm of torque. This marks the second plug-in hybrid model capable of external charging, following the "S550 Plug-in Hybrid Long" already released in Japan.
In response to the observation that the recent drop in gasoline prices might pose a challenge for (plug-in) hybrid models, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, emphasized the model's appeal from a unique "fun-to-drive" perspective, stating, "The acceleration provided by the electric motor's boost effect is something unobtainable with gasoline cars."

Elegance Meets SUV Dynamism: GLE Coupe Makes World Premiere
In front of the hotel prepared by Mercedes-Benz, a "G-Class" was displayed. Conversely, as visitors exited the entrance, a large billboard featuring the company's SUVs was erected on the building across the street. Set against the backdrop of a snowy Detroit, the advertisement highlighted the company's all-wheel-drive technology, 4MATIC, which ensures high safety and driving performance regardless of road conditions, even in snow, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2015.
"The SUV market in the US is expected to grow in both 2015 and 2016. We will be introducing five new models, including facelifts, into this segment."

The GLE Coupe, making its world premiere, and Chairman Zetsche, eager to make inroads into the SUV market.
Following introductory remarks by Dr. Zetsche, the "GLE Coupe" was announced – a large, sporty SUV. The statement, "Initially, it was planned as a coupe" (Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Development at Mercedes-Benz Cars), rings true given the cabin's compact window graphics and the characteristic fastback style that smoothly slopes down to the tail end.
The presence conveyed by the large standard 21-inch wheels is far more powerful than one might expect from images. The beautiful rear combination lamps and the body panels with their smooth curves, which also evoke a sense of similarity to the recently announced "S-Class Coupe", balance the aggressive stance with elegance. In short, it's a model that looks set to sell well in North America. Given that there are many drivers in Japan who favor large SUVs, we might expect interest from those looking to switch from the G-Class.

The CLA Shooting Brake: A Sporty Yet Personal Wagon
On the morning of the first press day, Mercedes-Benz also unveiled the new model, not exhibited at the show, the "CLA Shooting Brake", at the press conference held at the aforementioned hotel. It is a wagon-type model related to the popular compact four-door coupe, the "CLA".
"Previously, car enthusiasts had to choose between buying a sports car or a car that could carry sports gear. But with this vehicle, there's no need to compromise," said Dr. Weber, who was in charge of development. The CLA Shooting Brake is characterized by its strong emphasis on sportiness as a station wagon.
The term "shooting brake" originally referred to models based on coupes, like those from Aston Martin, with modified cargo areas to accommodate hunting equipment. It is also a personal station wagon. True to its name, the CLA Shooting Brake emphasizes a coupe-like personal feel by deliberately designing the side window graphics to be smaller, potentially opening up a new market segment.
While one must be careful not to hit their head when getting in and out, the rear seat space offers ample legroom and headroom. As mentioned, the smaller windows create a sense of enclosure, which will likely be particularly appreciated by users who prefer a strong sense of personal space.

From AMG Sports Models to the Autonomous Concept Car "F015": A Strategy of Volume
"The diversity of our model lineup is a crucial key to sales," stated Dr. Zetsche, underscoring Mercedes' seemingly relentless strategy of offering a wide range of vehicles.
In terms of sportiness, Mercedes is heavily investing in AMG. Sales have surged from 20,000 units in 2011 to 32,000 in 2013, and 47,500 in 2014. "Sales have doubled in three years. We aim to double the 2013 figures within the next three years," said Ola Källenius, Executive Vice President of Daimler AG and Head of Sales and Marketing for Mercedes-Benz Cars.
AMG models are available for both the GLE Coupe and the CLA Shooting Brake. Furthermore, the sports car "AMG GT", topped by a 375kW (510ps) model, is set for release. "We are bringing one-third of the production volume to the North American market," Dr. Zetsche announced to the American journalists, receiving applause. This indicates the significant success of the company's strategy for the North American market.
Additionally, the booth features what Mercedes technicians call a "robot car" – the ultimate autonomous vehicle, the "F015", and the " Mercedes-Maybach S-Class" announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show in Winter 2014.
The Mercedes-Maybach is characterized by a wheelbase of 3,365mm, 200mm longer than the current S-Class long-wheelbase model, and an overall length of 5,453mm, also 203mm longer. It is a chauffeur-driven (almost) exclusive vehicle, topped by a model featuring a 5,980cc V12 engine producing 390kW (530ps) and 830Nm. Many visitors at the show were observed testing the comfort of the rear seats.
