The New Mercedes-Benz G-Class Launches, Electrifying All Models with ISG
Mercedes-Benz G-Class
Newly Adopted Advanced Driver Assistance and Infotainment Systems
Mercedes-Benz Japan has launched sales of the updated G-Class. The lineup includes two models: the diesel "G 450d" and the gasoline "AMG G 63," both released as "Launch Edition" introductory models.
G 450d and AMG G 63 Introduced to Japan
Born in 1979 as a cross-country vehicle, the G-Class has evolved into a luxury SUV, with a significant overhaul equivalent to a full model change in 2018.
This update sees the electrification of both the diesel "G 450d" and the gasoline "AMG G 63" with the integration of the mild-hybrid ISG system. Additionally, the "Driving Assistance Package" and the "MBUX" infotainment system have been newly introduced.
The "G 450d" is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six turbo-diesel engine producing a maximum output of 270 kW (367 ps) and peak torque of 750 Nm. This represents an increase of 27 kW (37 ps) and 50 Nm compared to the previous "G 400d".
The "AMG G 63" is equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 direct-injection twin-turbo engine, delivering 430 kW (585 ps) and 850 Nm of torque. The integration of the ISG and a 48V electrical system enables a boost of 15 kW (20 ps) and 200 Nm, achieving 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds.
The transmission for the "G 450d" is a 9-speed automatic "9G-TRONIC," specifically tuned for off-road requirements, while the "AMG G 63" features the "AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT" 9-speed automatic transmission, also with dedicated tuning.
The suspension remains the same as the previous model, featuring double wishbones at the front and a rigid axle at the rear. Together with the traditional ladder frame, these contribute to its high off-road capability.
The "AMG G 63" debuts the "AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension" with electronically controlled hydraulic stabilizers, contributing to dynamic handling on both on-road and off-road conditions.
This electronically controlled adaptive damping system, featuring two hydraulic valves within the dampers, controls the extension and compression damping forces to achieve agile and precise handling.
The "DYNAMIC SELECT" system, which integrates drive, suspension, and steering settings, is standard on both models. New modes such as "Trail" and "Rock" for off-road driving have been added to accommodate various driving scenarios.
The exterior design also expresses their individual characters. The "G 450d" features a front grille with four powerful horizontal louvers, while the "AMG G 63" is accented with AMG's signature vertical fins.
Both models feature improved aerodynamics through changes to the A-pillar shape and the addition of roof spoilers at the front and rear of the roof.
The "G 450d" comes standard with the AMG Line package and the body-colored spare tire ring, which was previously an option. The "AMG G 63" includes the AMG Night Package as standard, with black accents throughout for a more imposing styling.
The "G 450d" is fitted with 20-inch wheels, while the "AMG G 63" comes with 21-inch wheels.
Inside, the interior design echoes the exterior, incorporating round air vents reminiscent of the G-Class's headlights, similar to the previous model. For the first time in the G-Class, the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) interactive infotainment system is featured, along with a touchscreen media display.
Additionally, both Launch Edition models come standard with comfort features such as KEYLESS-GO for keyless entry and exit, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, and a cup holder with heating and cooling functions.
In addition to these shared features, the "AMG G 63" is equipped with AMG Performance steering wheels and AMG DRIVE CONTROL switches.
The G-Class is available with left-hand drive. Pricing is ¥21.1 million for the "G 450d Launch Edition" and ¥30.8 million for the "Mercedes-AMG G 63 Launch Edition."
