The "S660 Concept": Heralding the Revival of the "Beat"

At the "Tokyo Motor Show 2013," opening to the public at Tokyo Big Sight on November 20th, Honda will exhibit the "S660 Concept," a kei-car mid-ship open-top sports car, as well as theDetroit Motor Show"NSX Concept," which had its world premiere at the Detroit Motor Show in January of this year, and the production-ready "N-WGN."

The "S660 Concept" can be seen as the successor to the popular kei-car mid-ship open-top sports car, the "Beat." Its exterior embodies Honda's recent design language, centered around the keyword "EXCITING H DESIGN!!!," presenting a futuristic, clean, and volumetrically rich appearance. The design of the metallic-tone panel above the front grille further emphasizes its modern Honda identity.

While parts like the front and rear lighting systems, alloy wheels, and door mirrors are show-specific elements, the exterior design—including the lights that wrap around the body, the body lines, and the silhouette—is described by the development team as "close to a production vehicle." The roof design is still under consideration, leaving possibilities open for both hardtop and soft-top configurations.

The interior highlights include bucket-style sports seats, a steering wheel with a unique, almost aircraft-like design, and a cockpit that wraps around the driver. The meters, which combine digital and analog elements reminiscent of the "CR-Z," strike an excellent balance between visibility and a sporty feel. Furthermore, the meter hood incorporates a rev counter with LED shift timing indicators, packed with ideas for an engaging driving experience.

Detailed specifications and body dimensions have not been disclosed as this is a concept car. However, the powertrain, for which an EV option was considered, is likely to ultimately feature a three-cylinder turbo engine designed for kei cars. Given Honda's commitment to balancing environmental performance and driving dynamics, we can anticipate some secret weapon being deployed here, making the production version a highly anticipated release.

Don't Be Confined

At Honda's booth at the Tokyo Motor Show, alongside the "NSX Concept" unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show in January, will be the "N-WGN," a new kei-car from the "N" series slated for production, and a restored exhibit of the 1962 "S360," representing Honda's origins.

The display of the "S360" likely signifies respect for the historical models that formed Honda's foundation. However, the pairing of the new "S660 Concept" and the vintage "S360" sports cars might serve as a preview of a new "S" series of kei cars, following the "N" series which revived classic "N" models for the modern era. With this in mind, one can't help but eagerly await the day when "Concept" is removed from the "S660 Concept" name.

Incidentally, Honda's keyword for the "Tokyo Motor Show 2013" is "Don't Be Confined." We look forward to proposals that transcend the boundaries of kei cars and offer enjoyment for everyone, embodied in exhibits like the "S660 Concept."
